    Default Absinthe

Absinthe was banned in the USA for 100 years. And now is legal in some forms.
Now most people have grand conspiracies of why pot as banned. I never attribute to malice to what can easily be explained by stupidity. So why was it banned? What was the point of keeping it banned? Was it just because the mythology behind it was so good?

I've tried it. Guess, you have to really like anise to enjoy it.

I had some about 15 years ago. Buddee brought it back from Czech Republic. We did the whole caramelized sugar part too. We definitely drank too much. Memory was hazy. Do not recommend.

It is awful. I am glad it is now legal again as that means the goth scene can finally pretend it is to mainstream to keep drinking this dyed piss.

Absinthe was what the prohibition argument rallied around. They claimed that absinthe caused Jean Lanfray to go mad and a moral panic started that banned first absinthe, then in the US and other places alcohol in general. There was a chemical argument but it was based on bad science that scientists never figured out, leading to finally the research being reviewed and dismissed.

Remember this was the era of temperance movements and industrialization. People were terrified of the ways society was changing and for a while, they rallied behind absinthe being the devil they could defeat. Mix in ichors and humours and a lack of good chemistry machines, and false science also ran high. By the time absinthe was banned, no one really looked that deep into the science, as science made up it's mind already on the chemicals. Recently with the revival however and mass spec machines science found that the myths were not based in reality and absinthism was just alcoholism.

I find the grand conspiracy of pot being banned and the minor stupidity of absinthe being banned to be compelling.

Legalize drugs. Allow Darwinism to run its course. Farewell ye junkies, farewell.

I first (and last) had absinthe about 15 years ago. Met up with a few work mates in a bar and just noticed the bottle sitting at the top of the bar. My memory tells me it was around 70-80 % (I know there are varying strengths) but that could be false but it was stronger than anything I had ever had, I can still remember nearly being sick after every shot. The 4 of us drank the rest of the bottle in shots not more than 3 shots each. I had one beer before this and the rest of the night was a disaster. The barman told me the next day I was in he had never seen people get drunk so fast and he would never sell it again. I think there was a law you were only allowed to sell two shots of it to one person, but again, I could be wrong.

It should be legal. It's your right to drink what you want. Personally, I'll stick to beer.
