  • Re: What Games Are You Playing?

Started Andromeda, it is a really good game, but aside from some wonky animations, there is one critical flaw: automatic cover. Cover should always be manual, there's not even a crouch button, so taking cover is 100% up to the game, I'd say a good 60-70% of the damage I'm taking is the game refusing to take cover. It's maddening, especially consider the enemies can often kill you much quicker than you can kill them, even on normal your life drains incredibly rapidly, so keeping in the line of fire until the game chooses certainly causes problems.

Andromeda has had me hooked since I got it.

I'd agree with Rags on the cover thing, it's super annoying when you want to cover but Ryder just won't

A lot of it I like though, I like the addition of the forward stations and changing your squad and load out mid-planet during missions depending on what you'll need is great. Loving exploring in the Nomad too, although not a huge fan of either Elaaden or Voeld.

Well, I'll be revisiting Andromeda at a later date, I got a mission breaking glitch that took the wind out of my sails for the game, I was too deep in to restart, but not deep enough that I cared to keep going, I'll check it again in a year or two when it has a few patches under it's belt. It was a good deal of fun except for the cover, just technical issues really holding it back. Also, it might just be me, but I much preferred the mining from Mass Effect 2, where you sweep the world off planet, it is infinitely more tedious to drive the NOMAD around terrain looking for the minerals.

So, I started in on Yooka Laylee, it's pretty much right where I imagined it would be, it doesn't hit the highs of Kazooie, but it's still a solid and enjoyable platformer. One thing so far that's a dud, is Retrorex, I only played his first game, but it controlled like dogshit and was super tedious, hopefully the others are better. Another irksome thing are the races, you need to play perfectly to have any hope of winning, literally the second race the butterflies are so far apart that you don't have enough energy to get to them, miss one butterfly, and you lose (never catch up), which becomes an issue because the butterflies could be tempermental on being collected, sometimes it'd seem like you'd fly right through them. Luckily one of the earliest Tonics (you can equip a single tonic at a time for a gameplay buff) was power bar drains slower, which made quick work of the race afterwards. It does have a bit of the Tooies, where it's not exactly the most intuitive world design at times, but I'm still enjoying the hell out of it.

I picked up Yooka Laylee today myself, just exploring the first world but it's a major nostalgia rush, the humour is the same, the obvious yet still funny names "Trouser Snake"

Quiet day tomorrow so i'm looking forward to putting a solid few hours in.

A ton and a half of credit to Rad for this superb artwork

Finished up Yooka Laylee, it was really fun, definitely hits all the right nostalgic notes. Two things though, first off, holy fuck, the Retro Rex arcade games are terrible, boring as hell and go on WAY too long, only one of them I didn't have a problem with was the one that tossed out feathers and you ran around collecting them. Also, the final boss was a bit drawn out, so many times it was like "Surely THIS is the final hit." and the fucker would go into yet another phase, and the final phase is kind of a bitch. But other than that, I really enjoyed it, not enough to break onto my instant classic list, but I mostly enjoyed it start to finish. Casino level was pretty bleh though, a common complaint I share.

After that I moved onto Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero, this one takes some time to unfold, kinda tedious until you unlock some new moves and upgrades, but once it gets going, really great throwback to games of yesteryear, forms all work well (though they could have left the mouse out entirely), fun, fluid, enjoyed myself 100%. Again, not enough to be an instant classic, but enough that I'll return to it some day.

And then after I beat those, I'm FINALLY onto Yakuza 0, it was a day 1 buy I haven't touched because the year has been so front loaded with releases. So far it's dependable as Yukuza always is (including good ol' Kamurocho), great story, sharp gameplay, loving it. Oddly enough, not really feeling Kiryu very much, I kinda think his 3rd style doesn't mesh well with his other 2, and it's just not feeling as sharp; granted, it a prequel, so I'm seeing if maybe later in the game he unfolds into the Kaz I know and love. That being said Majima is a blast, granted I haven't seen his 3rd style, so I don't know how well that'll mesh, but his first 2 are an absolute blast, Thug and Slugger mesh perfectly for the brutal playful style I'd expect from Majima.

I'm kind of disappointed in the change to weapon system, because the previous games, you could equip a weapon to each direction, but now with the style system, you can only equip 1 weapon at a time, which means you don't get as much variation in switching through weapons throughout combos. Would have been nice if they worked the style system in with the previous weapon system, because then fights could be really insane. Also wish it switched more smoothly between styles, there's a slight disruption of combat when you go from one style to the next.

But still, it's great as Yakuza always see, see how it shakes out as the game continues.

I might pick up Yooka Laylee myself, mostly cause I should probably buy a couple of new games, for when my nephew visits.

I usually wait for Gamefly (so it wouldn't be for six months...) but I'm thinking of buying Yooka Laylee outright.

Smart choice if you do, one of the things i'm catching myself doing is just listening to the music, it's like i'm a kid again.
