  • Former England Manager Graham Taylor passes away

Former England manager Graham Taylor has died at the age of 72.

Taylor, born in Worksop in 1944, had a successful club career with Lincoln City, Watford and Aston Villa before becoming the national manager in 1990.

He took charge of England between 1990 and 1993, leading them to Euro '92 in Sweden, although he resigned in 1993 after the team failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the USA.

Taylor managed England from 1990 to 1993

His managerial career began at Lincoln City in 1972, he had been a player at the club prior to him taking charge. Five years later, Taylor began a long association with Watford.

In his first spell, which lasted for a decade, Taylor took Watford from the 4th Division to the 1st in just five years, he also led the club to the 1984 FA Cup Final where they lost 2-0 to Everton.

Taylor took Watford into the Premier League via the play-offs during his second spell at the club

He left Watford to become manager of Aston villa in 1987, leading the club to promotion to the 1st Division a year later. They came second a year after that.

Taylor's last managerial role was with Aston Villa between 2002 and 2003

After his spell in charge of England, Taylor returned to club management in 1994 with Wolves, before returning to Watford in 1996 where he enjoyed another five years as their manager.

His last managerial role was with Aston Villa whom he once again took charge of between 2002-2003

Read a lot of great stories today about just how important he was to Watford. Before he arrived at the club they had spent just two seasons in the top two divisions, in the 40 years since they've spent just two seasons outside them.

Remarkable that Sunderland didn't even hold a minute applause or moment of silence before the game yesterday, all that was given was a graphic on screen in the prematch buildup.

Anyway, Graham Taylor always came across to me as a humble, well-spoken and great gentleman of the sport. The story about John Barnes and how he dealt with racist comments made towards Barnes was superb to hear. Quite refreshing as well to hear it was.
