    Re: 2017 Australian Open

The Williams sisters and Fed are all 35 and over. Nadal is 30. Have we ever had a Grand Slam final where everyone was that old before?

No and there has to be more to it than simply The Big 4 and Serena are so good.

Even though tennis seems more international than ever, did it lose elite athletes to other sports that has caused this dearth in top talent in the current 20-28 year old band? It can't just be the rackets and court speeds that do favour endurance and mental toughness over the explosiveness of youth. We are still talking about Dimitrov as being about to really break through and he is 25. He should be in the middle of his peak years. Fed, Nadal, Novak and Murray were all having great results (to various degrees) in late teens/early twenties as all-time greats should.

The women's side is even more ridiculous. Serena's Majors won ratio pre/post turning 28 is 11-12; Fed by comparison is 14-4 and he has had a great 28 and beyond career.

Does the increase of media presence and accessibility of social media play a part? The top players seem even more insurmountable, young guys can read all their stats in an instant, pre-match interviews and press conferences are all about how great their opponent is and they get intimidated? They can read every bit of criticism ever posted about them and let it get to them. It must be a combination of factors.

So it turns out that Serena won this while being pregnant.

                Wow.

So she's now at 20 weeks, or about four months. So that meant that she must have been pregnant for just over a month when she won.

To do that, while dealing with things like morning sickness, and having something growing inside of you, is incredible.
