  • Roland Garros 2016

We turn our attention to the second major championship of the year, the French Open. This is probably the championship with the most riding on it - Novak Djokovic needs it to complete the career grand slam and to hold all four major titles at the same time, for Rafael Nadal it represents arguably the only remaining opportunity to add to his 12 major titles, and it remains the only final that Andy Murray has never reached. Plenty of storylines, and we're sure to see plenty of drama as a result. The draw:

    Novak Djokovic [1]

    First Round - Yen-Hsun Lu [WR 100] 6-4 6-1 6-1
    Second Round - Steve Darcis [WR 162] 7-5 6-3 6-4
    Third Round - Aljaž Bedene [WR 66] 6-2 6-3 6-3
    Fourth Round - Roberto Bautista-Agut [14] 6-3 6-4 6-1 7-5
    Quarter-Final - Tomáš Berdych [7] 6-3 7-5 6-3
    Semi-Final - Dominic Thiem [13] 6-2 6-1 6-4
    Final - Andy Murray [2]

    Andy Murray [2]

    First Round - Radek Štěpánek [WR 129] 3-6 3-6 6-0 6-3 7-5
    Second Round - Mathias Bourgue [WR 165] 6-2 2-6 4-6 6-2 6-3
    Third Round - Ivo Karlović [27] 6-1 6-4 7-6[3]
    Fourth Round - John Isner [15] 7-6[9] 6-4 6-3
    Quarter-Final - Richard Gasquet [9] 5-7 7-6[3] 6-0 6-2
    Semi-Final - Stan Wawrinka [3] 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2
    Final - Novak Djokovic [1]

    Stan Wawrinka [3]

    First Round - Lukáš Rosol [WR 68] 4-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4
    Second Round - Taro Daniel [WR 91] 7-6[7] 6-3 6-4
    Third Round - Jeremy Chardy [30] 6-4 6-3 7-5
    Fourth Round - Viktor Troicki [22] 7-6[5] 6[7]-7 6-3 6-2
    Quarter-Final - Albert Ramos-Viñolas [WR 53] 6-2 6-1 7-6[7]
    Semi-Final - Andy Murray [2] 4-6 2-6 6-4 2-6

    Rafael Nadal [4]

    First Round - Sam Groth [WR 95] 6-1 6-1 6-1
    Second Round - Facundo Bagnis [WR 99] 6-3 6-0 6-3
Third Round - Marcel Granollers [WR 68] w/o

Wawrinka appears to have an extremely tough draw basically from the outset, it looks a long shot for him to even get to the semi-finals. Djokovic will reach the semi-finals in a breeze, nothing stands on his way. Nadal has a couple of nasty obstacles, Fognini and Thiem have both troubled him before, and Tsonga won't be a walkover either if he gets to that point. Murray has big servers early on which he's usually very adept at handling - you feel Murray's first legitimate assault on the French Open title could come down to the Nishikori match in the last eight.

I'm going for Djokovic over Murray in four sets in the final. You?

    Re: Roland Garros 2016

With the news about Nadal now and Federer not even making it to RG, is it fair to say that if Novak doesn't win here this year, he's just not going to? When is he going to have a better chance.

A ton and a half of credit to Rad for this superb artwork

        Re: Roland Garros 2016

He'll have plenty of chances but there is no doubt that the pressure is growing. This year feels like his year though. No Nadal or Federer, and with Murray, Wawrinka and Nishikori all in the other half of the draw, he knows he'll only have to beat one of them.

Just the third man to hold all four major titles at once. I think he'll go past Federer's 17 grand slams at this rate.
