Default LIST! CAMERAS! ACTIONS! PW's 35 Favorite Directors!

The time is here! I've finished compiling all of the lists , a list that totalled nearly 100 different directors in total. For my sanity though we are only listing the top thirty five to start ... I've decided to hold off on all the ones to miss the cut as it might add some intrigue to who's remaining as there are some pretty heavy hitters to miss the cut. Thanks to everyone who submitted a list - you know who you are. I and PW appreciates all of you!

I like Whedon ALOT and I think if I were to include all of his credits including writing and producing he would of been in the top three for me , especially as just a screenwriter where movies like Toy Story and Speed come into play. The guy is as talented as can be and spans both big and small screen with great success - which is another reason why I think he ended up making it so high on the list.

He's already beloved by a lot of nerd culture (as far as I know) and that's largely due to TV so I think it inflates his status on this list. Not too take anything away from him for The Avengers - a movie I love and Age of Ultron as a movie I love a lot more than most peopel seem to. I just think it's early and he's taken on good projects but I do think he is a little too high for my blood on the list , but I definitely want to see him do a lot more.

Joss Whedon was never really in consideration for my list. There are some on my list that were on it because of the influence of their time television directors, but he never entered my mind. I love his shows like Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and even Dollhouse. However, I'm not a fan of his movies at all. I'll take his time on Astonishing X-Men over the Avengers movies.

Yes because most below are stuck in 7 or 8 way ties and quagmires - all will be listed eventually and can be discussed but I'm not going to list all six 1 point getters and than all nine 2 point getters individually. Around thirty five is where there was a bit of a divide and it also at least included everyone's top three.

He who does the work to make the list is the one who decides the parameters.

The very small number of Marvel movies I like don't include either Avengers film. I don't know much of his tv work and tv is mostly a writers medium anyway.

Wouldn't have come near my list.

Well if you're going to go that way over a fairly innocuous comment...

Has there ever been a list/draft thing that CK didn't bitch about? Jeez.

I did very briefly consider Whedon, but as others have said that's more for his overall creative output rather than his work as a director. I think The Avengers is what made Marvel what it is today, and he deserves credit for that big time.

I like Whedon a lot (I'm a HUGE Firefly fan) but his film resume was still a bit too light for him to make my list.

I'll second this...Whedon's fine, but I never think of him as a movie director.

Thirded. If this were TV directors Joss Whedon would probably be #1 on my list. But he didn't even cross my mind when making my list for this.

I had Joss Whedon as Number 3 on my list- I loved Avengers and Serenity, and really enjoyed Age of Ultron.

Much Ado About Nothing was also really good, though I know few have seen it.

I think directing/writing comedy is incredibly hard and The Farrelly's are some of the best out there , they did absolutely make it towards the bottom of my list but not nearly as much for their biggest hits as much as there slew of movies right in the middle - most of which hold a special place in my heart. Not too say I don't love There's Something About Marry and Dumb and Dumber but if it was just those two movies on their own they would of missed my list by a mile.

You throw in Me , Myself and Irene along with Kingpin though and they move their way up the list on a very strong (IMO) four movie platform - all of which would make a list of my favorite comedies. The Ringer I did enjoy and found incredibly quotable and even Shallow Hal and Stuck on You had their moments of great comedy.

I'm very picky when it comes to comedy films, so no comedy directors made my list. There are a lot of prolific directors out there but I only tend to like one or two films of their collection. The Farrelly Brothers are no exception. Dumb and Dumber is great. Kingpin is decent. I've only seen one other - There's Something About Mary - and I think it's bad. Not funny in the slightest.

The Farrelly Bros. definitely make my list. Dumb and Dumber, There Something About Mary, Me Myself and Irene, and especially Kingpin all had me laughing my ass off. I'll easily take them over many other so-called comedy directors (*cough* WOODY ALLEN *cough*)

There is one comedy director I COMPLETELY forgot about though, and I'm ashamed of myself for it. Had I remembered he would have top 5 on my list.

Yeah these guys just aren't my cup of tea at all. I think comedy is way more subjective than most other genres in that if you don't like it you really don't like it and that's how I feel about their filmography.

I agree about comedy , The Farrelly's are a specific brand of comedy. I think they are one of the few comedy directors who even before I got into learning about directing that I could identify one of their movies within the first 10-15 minutes. They hit a certain note and it's a note I love.

There is another comedy director out there who is rather beloved , especially some of his recent stuff that I can't stand. There's another huge name that I don't like either - so yeah comedy more than anything is subjective.

The Farrelly's run from Dumb and Dumber to Osmosis Jones should be applauded. To me, their movies represent a certain era of late 90s/early 2000s humor. I still find most of their movies funny, however, not as funny as I did years ago. Comedy goes through cycles, and is much different since their peak. Farrelly's have slipped its magnified by the fact that comedy has changed and the standard for "outlandish" (which is what made their use of slapstick comedy funny to begin with) has been pushed to not just a different level but a different direction.

Controversial Statement Alert: I like Ghostbusters 2 more than the original.

Reitman was just on the outside looking in on my list , I like a lot of his movies but there are really none in particular that I'm in LOVE with. The original Ghostbusters is his greatest and even most groundbreaking piece of work. I think the fact that I seen part two first at a young age just made me like it more , even though I recognize that the original is probably the better movie.

I haven't seen a lot of his other top movies like David , Stripe and Meatballs but his movie in the middle ground like Draft Day , GB2 , Kindergarten Cop all are good rewatchable movies.
