Default ECW Greatest Wrestler: A Countdown

I've been meaning to do a countdown for a while now and my idea to do a Greatest ECW Wrestler countdown inspired by a similar ROH project elsewhere was well-received so that's what we're gonna do.

PM me your list of 25 greatest ECW wrestlers. I'm intentionally leaving the parameters vague. Define greatest however you like. Original ECW only though. No WWECW and they must have competed in at least one actual ECW match so (I'm hoping) that disqualifies Heyman & Styles.

Since UT's History Draft is still ongoing there is no big hurry on this. I'll make 4/25 the date to have all entries in since Kilgore informed me that's the 25th Anniversary of ECW. But the date can be moved up or pushed back depending on interest and when the draft finishes up.

    Have at it folks.

Edit: Oh, and you can vote for tag teams. No need to separate, say, The Broad Street Bullies. Instead of theoretically having Tony Stetson at #5 & Johnny Hotbody at #6 you can just list the Bullies at #5.

I'll definitely get getting a list in for this - even if it might be tough for me to find 25 ECW guys I actually like. I might get dicey at the end.

    Two questions about eligibility.

    1. Does Paul Heyman count?

    2. Does Steve Austin count? He wrestled Mikey Whipreck right?

    1. No. I checked. Neither him nor Styles ever wrestled an official ECW match. Sadly Tod Gordon did have a few
    2. Yep. You can vote for Austin. He wrestled two ECW matches.

I want to participate in this but feel insecure about my lack of ECW knowledge in comparison to folks like Shin, Kilg, and Bake... A question that springs to my mind (and I'm not sure if I should be embarrassed about) is did 911 wrestle any actual matches? I've always had the sense that he was an important element to ECW at the time but never got the impression that he actually wrestled any matches.

Similarly, just because he cut an awesome promo doesn't qualify Pillman, right?

911 did wrestle from time to time and was a very important part of the promotion for a while there.

Pillman actually did wrestle one ECW match in 1994 so he counts.

Pillman wrestled at least one match I know of , teaming with Douglas so I assume he counts. Not sure about 911.

Been working on my list this morning. Feel pretty good about my Top 17. Then things get cluttered. I tend to favor longevity but it's hard to ignore the impact made by relatively short term people like, say, Guerrero & Malenko. Those last few spots are gonna be tough....

This is one list where number 1 isn't clear cut to me. I think I'll be pulling my hair out on this one for awhile.

16 of my top 17 made it but boy is that 17th a glaring omission.

My list is going to be based on who personified ECW the most. In ring ability isn't going to factor into my list at all.

My top 10 are clear but after that I am not sure yet how I am going to place people.

Same here. Well, 95% true at any rate. Two people might sneak onto the bottom of my list mainly for in ring influence.

I know it's a greatest list , but I have a horrible time differentiating between greatest and favorites of mine because IMO the two go hand in hand. I will put guys like RVD and Sabu on there out of respect and what they obviously meant to the promotion but at the end of the day I'm probably going knock them down some pegs because I didn't enjoy them.

My list is going to include workers and characters that I enjoyed the most from ECW while also honoring the talent that personified ECW. Just off the top of my head, Sabu may be my number one along with Shane Douglas and 2Cold.

I'm so conflicted on RVD though. I never liked him personally but I can't deny that he is one of the faces of ECW. So for that, he will place.

    All credit goes to surrender!

How do we handle voting for something like Triple Threat? Can we just vote for Triple Threat as a cheat way to throw love collectively to Douglas, Benoit, Malenko, Candido, Bigelow, Storm, and Scorpio? Or would we need to get more specific?

Tag teams are accepted but I'm drawing the line at voting for entire factions.

Can we vote for the same wrestler multiple times? I'm leaning towards yes but I'll leave the final decision up to you guys.

Example: A really big Nova fan might vote for Nova as a singles wrestler, Nova & Meanie and Nova & Chetti. Acceptable or no?

Received one ballot already. Somebody is on the ball.

    I would say yes.

    Flair has two HoF rings.

You know what rhymes with two?

Yeah I would assume yes as well , in the past with wrestlers we've been able to vote for both Bret Hart and The Hart Foundation or Jeff Hardy and The Hardy Brothers. They are separate acts so it makes sense.

I got a Top 39 right. The WWE list isn't a bad start, although I think they're missing Pitbulls, 2 Cold Scorpio, for sure. Ron Simmons, Rey Mysterio, Badd Company should be up for consideration. Of the more famous "cameos" like Austin and Pillman, Jericho should strongly be considered too. The Arena really got behind him during his short stay, and he did that with very little name recognition. Bad Breed and Hack Meyers are dark horse candidates, although Top 25 might be a stretch. Bad Breed really brought the ultraviolent element to ECW in 1995, and Balls Mahoney probably doesn't exist without the combination of them (certainly Axl) and The Shah. Somebody like Tommy Cairo is also an important cog in early ECW that might be overlooked. In some ways, he helped make Sandman and Tommy Dreamer while Raven was still Johnny F'n Polo.

I think New Jack will be a two timer on my list. The Gangstas were mega mega over, and solo Jack was probably even moreso. It would be hard not to have him show up twice.

25 slots turns out to be so few! That's why I found I ended up leaning against giving guys multi-love by giving them multiple slots... and also why I was asking for cheat options like being able to just include "Triple Threat" and have it cover everyone who was ever a member.
