History will be made on Friday, March 31, at 7:00 PM as Ring of Honor (ROH) and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) will simulcast a live press conference from both Lakeland, FL, and Japan! This unprecedented press conference will feature NJPW CEO Naoyoki Sugabayashi, NJPW President Katsuhiko Harada, ROH Ambassador Cary Silkin, NJPW stars Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega, as well as ROH stars the Young Bucks, Christopher Daniels, and Dalton Castle! The world of pro wrestling will never be the same after March 31.
    We ARE pro-wrestling.

The weekend of October 26-27, 2001, ended up being one of the most important weekends in modern pro wrestling's history. On that weekend, All Pro Wrestling held a tournament in Vallejo, CA, dubbed the "King of the Independents." The 16-man tournament was comprised of a veritable who's who of the future of wrestling: Frankie Kazarian, Christopher Daniels, Spanky, Low Ki, Samoa Joe, and the inevitable winner: Bryan Danielson. The tournament as important for who featured in it, as for who was in the crowd that night: Rob Feinstein and Gabe Sapolsky. From that tournament came the germ of an idea: a wrestling promotion based on in-ring performance. Ring of Honor was born that weekend.

The promotion itself held it's first show on February 23, 2002, headlined by a three-way main event between Bryan Danielson, Low Ki, and Christopher Daniels, delivering a MOTYC in the process. That became the calling card of Ring of Honor. Unknown stars delivering the best quality matches you could find in America. Since 2002, many future World champions and mega stars have come through ROH - AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Seth Rollins, CM Punk, Sami Zayn, and more. Gabe Sapolsky had a knack for finding unknown talent and giving them a platform, and it in many ways ended up being an unofficial feeder system for WWE.

There was controversy, though. In 2003, Ring of Honor owner Rob Feinstein was caught in a child predator sting. It causes a rift between ROH and TNA, at the time allies, that has really never been repaired since. It was during this time that Cary Silkin bought in and became the man behind the money behind the promotion. For years, Cary bled money into the organization. While it was always either a money-loser or just barely getting by, Cary paid the bills because of his low of the genre, the product, and the talent. But what is generally not known is that after years of unsuccessfully trying to take ROH to the next level, either via PPV in 2008 or with a deal on HDnet (now AXS) in 2009, in 2011 Silkin was done. Many current fans would say that when Sinclair Broadcast Group purchased ROH, ROH of old died. What they don't know is that if SBG had not purchased ROH, not only would ROH of old died, ROH would have died period. Nevertheless, with the aid of Jim Cornette, Joe Koff, and Gary Juster, Cary Silkin sold ROH to SBG.

For years, SBG has treated ROH as it does any of its properties. It is a low-cost, moderate moneymaker. They put very little in and profit well enough from the promotion. This has led to very little advances that one would expect. Certainly over time ROH has grown with advances in their production, but not at the level of TNA - which ROH draws higher viewers than on weekly basis. Still, ROH has managed to be successful as a touring promotion in America since SBG took over. That's the hardest thing for fans to accept - it's not exactly the ROH of old, but it's also more successful than ROH of old. Granted they now have more exposure than ever before. During this time frame, booker Hunter Johnston (Delirious), built a relationship with New Japan Pro Wrestling. This relationship has been one of the biggest factors in ROH's success the last several years.

Now the promotion is en route for the next major step and change. With Wrestlemania-weekend approaching, every promotion under the sun will be taking advantage and putting on top cards (except, interestingly, TNA which really has its home in Orlando). The concept of piggybacking off of tourists and Wrestlemania really started with ROH. They'll be holding an event in Lakeland, FL, called Supercard of Honor XI. It was announced this week that ROH would hold a simulcast with NJPW to broadcast on New Japan World (NJPW's streaming service) and ROH's web site via FITE TV. Over the years, the ebbs and flows, the little promotion that was born from an idea in 2001 ended up becoming the second biggest promotion in America behind only the giant that is WWE. During this simulcast on March 31, it will be announced that New Japan Pro Wrestling has purchased Ring of Honor.

For a long time, NJPW officials have wanted to get a foot in the door in America - going so far as to book G1 Climax events in California this July. However, this purchase will allow them to do so without having to build from the ground up. Sources indicate that New Japan plans to put a lot of money into this venture. One would expect that there will be major changes in the office line-up, particularly since Hunter Johnston has announced he will be taking independent bookings after Wrestlemania-weekend. One would also expect a couple of New Japan talents to start making their homes in America, to prop the promotion up. What will be very interesting to see is the effect his has on Adam Cole, who for all intents and purposes was WWE-bound. The little promotion that could, the one that was popular with the smarks, is about to enter another stage in its history. You could even say that after Wrestlemania, for ROH, a new era of honor will begin.
