    Default Doctor Who Discussion Thread

I tried looking for the old thread but couldn't find it, so I'm making a new thread, to post the trailer for the upcoming tenth season of Doctor Who and to give us a place to discuss the show once new episodes start airing April 15th onwards. I'm not really sure how I feel about this upcoming season of Doctor Who, and in all honesty, I started losing interest in the show last season, so hopefully they'll be able to bring back that interest with the tenth season.

so anyone else been watching? Surprisingly strong season, and it's a shame that just as it seems Capaldi's hitting his stride it's time for him to go.

10th season? More like twenty tenth. It's been going since 1963. Best Doctor Tom Baker. I haven't watched in years though.

I've only seen the first half of this season so far, but I'm enjoying it, so much more so than I did of the previous season of Doctor Who (hands down my least favorite season of the show), it's good to see Doctor Who is back to being entertaining again.

I'm on season 2 now and I've really enjoyed it. It's so wacky and I dig the fact the transition between Christopher Eccleston and David Tennanton it is flawless.

Props to surrender for the great banner.

This was the best Season since half way through Tenants run, I didn't like early Capaldi as he was too bumbling, but it all makes sense as a man trying to make sense of who he is.
Turns out the man is quite brilliant.

And spoilers... But the Master and Missy scenes were aamaaaazing.
I am not certain whether or not we have seen the last of Bill and Ardoll, does anyone know?

Stopped watching during that super long break between seasons and just read a summary of what is up. Man I need to get through this.

Next season sounds really wild. Chibnall taking over for Moffat should be great. Moffat's style is getting predictable. Great run, but starting to lose steam. Rumors floating around that Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be the next doctor, which is just about the only way I can see to regenerate Capaldi into something fresh that does not just duplicate one of the prior doctors. Loved her in Fleabag. A seductive female doctor would be quite the change of script.

If it's a female doctor I won't watch it, and I have seen or read every episode there is.
I'm not a fan of Moffat and glad to see him go.

I have watched the show for years and in the last 3 of those they have made the show a vehicle for pushing agenda on gender and sexuality.

It's not the actual fact that the doctor might be female but the agenda behind it.
The doctor is not a woman and time lords don't change sex, this was known for years.

I can't believe all the butt-hurt that's going on over this. Maybe you all should just give it a chance. While at the same time, the creative team of Doctor Who better have a good explanation for regenerations.

I don't see what the problem is, since it has already been established that male Time Lords can in fact regenerate into females, case in point Michelle Gomez playing the role of Missy/The Master. I dunno, just seems silly to me, to stop watching the show now, when you continued to watch it, when they did the same thing with The Master.

It feels like stunt casting to try to regenerate, for lack of a better word, a dying series. I don't blame Peter Capaldi. It took a while for him to find his groove, but he was excellent in the role. The problem is the structure of the series doesn't allow much in the way of plot development or growth. Even Capaldi said he was leaving because Dr. Who was such a one-dimensional character and there was no where to go with the role. There are only so many times the Doctor can face the Daleks, the most fearsome and incompetent baddies in the universe. IMO, it's time for Doctor Who to take another long hiatus. Not 16 years, but time for everything to feel fresh again.

I don't have an issue with anything other than this being shoe-horned into the canon.
Guess what, about 2 years ago Time Lords were Male or Female, they didn't alternate sexes until someone thought it would be a wonderfully "modern" idea that they did.
See, I have no issue with a female Thor or Spider Gwen, because it is someone taking up the mantle.
A Female Time Lord who took over while the Doctor was in a coma or something... I have no issue with that whatsoever.
What I take issue with is irreparably tampering with a character that has been known and loved for 50 years.

Same with people who want a Female James Bond... Why not write a fresh and new spy thriller about a female agent?
This is more a Ghostbusters reboot type thing than anything else, doing it because they can.

Actually the idea dates back 20 years to a Comic Relief special in 1997. Rowan Atkinson begins as the Doctor then goes through all his remaining regenerations in about 2 minutes ending with Hugh Grant regenerating into Joanna Lumley for the comedic end. Which of course planted the idea.

iNCY's not incorrect, though -- good sci-fi, like good stories in general, can and often does explore contemporary issues but through a lens to a world just sideways from this one so we can look at it through fresh eyes.

I'm not going to say whether DW explores transsexuality or even if it should but it would be so easy it seems ridiculous for them not to. How will the relationships with any supporting characters change? If you take a married couple, the Time Lady regenerates into a Time Lord what happens to the marriage? He's mostly the same person she was a few mintues ago, but is it a bridge too far for the husband?

I'd be much more intrigued by a Matt Smith socially awkward style female Doctor than a flirty or overly emotional or whatever sort of archetypal woman stereotype we might think of.
