I was really surprised that 'Hell or High Water' got noms. It was alright, but man was it slow. And Jeff Bridges getting nominated for it is strange too, since he was just playing a slightly toned-down version of his Rooster Cogburn.
I've seen five of the nine Best Picture nominees, but I don't feel strongly enough about any of them to root for them.

Can we get a VBookie for Best Picture, best actor and best actress?

I'm rooting for Ryan Gosling.... not sure about anyone else.

I am rooting for Moonlight. Need to see Fences still.

And man, what a shit year for movie. Even the top picks are mostly forgettable.

I'm surprised to see so few nominations for Nocturnal Animals.

The awards season backlash against La La Land is a bit sad - but I guess that's what overpromotion and celebration inevitably leads too.

I'm going to see Moonlight this weekend. Looking forward to it.

And if we do a vbookie can it be just guessing the odds like the emmys, rather than a reputable source. I want to multiply my monies on easy bets again. Maybe Emma Stone at 20/1?

I haven seen two of the animated nominees. Not much else.

La La Land may have so many nominations. But as we learned from The Color Purple, you can enter with so many nominations, but you can also leave it empty handed.

Yeah in horror reviews the film had a hard, hard split. I did not really care for it.

As long as Fences deosnt win Best Adapted Screenplay, i'll be fine. Watched it last night & it honestly wasn't what I was expecting. I was super hyped to see it, but found it pretty boring. The film began going downhill when Denzel started doing his wife dirty. It was just a really depressing movie about Denzel talking shit half drunk off gin in his backyard for 2hrs.

On a side note, Idk why I expected his his handicap brother to actually be able to play that trumpet at the end. When he blew nothing but air I bout lost it

After watching 'Moonlight' last night, I cannot fathom why it got a Best Picture nom. Or any of it's noms really, except maybe for Noamie Harris. There is no story, no plot, so how can there be a nom for Adapted Screenplay. And I didn't notice a score, in fact I felt many scenes needed some, so how can it get a nom for that? I really feel this is only getting praise because it (barely) deals with a difficult subject, that being being a gay man in a tough-guy black culture.

You are not kidding. Yikes, this has been a brutal year. I'm 7 down, still two to go. Haven't seen Hell or High Water or Hidden Figures yet.

    My rankings so far:

    1) Arrival - easily the best of the 7 that I've seen. So far ahead of number 2 it's not even close.
    2) Lion
    3) Manchester by the Sea
    4) La La Land
    5) Fences
    6) Hacksaw Ridge - I hate war movies. Garfield was good.
    7) Moonlight

Watched Manchester by the Sea tonight. I was quite moved. It will be the only Oscar nominated movie I seek out this year though. Somehow I've gone completely out on the Oscars.

I'm so disappointed in these results. Viola was the only deserving win of the major categories. Of all the nominees, Moonlight was the movie I enjoyed the least.

I've seen exactly zero Best Picture nominees so I can't judge. I picked Moonlight to win though so I got a good laugh out of the ending of the show (I only bet on longshots in the vBookie because fake money..my wife and I did our own picks for the major categories).

Was Denzel really a favourite for Best Actor this year? I'm reading today that he looked pissed off but I think that's just how he looks all the time. I thought Casey Affleck was the favourite the whole time from what I've been reading/hearing. Then again a lot of the same people are saying that Casey Affleck should be in jail for his assault stuff so hey.

EDIT: I also wish Warren Beatty got the Best Actor card and not the Best Actress card because then Jimmy Kimmel would have had to take an Oscar away from Matt Damon.
