Well, I decided to go the other way around, and started with Wildlands, should be able to finish it for Yooka-Laylee, then have plenty of time for both that and Andromeda, and if I can't finish it, no biggie. It's a decent game, doesn't really do anything terrible, well, kinda driving, but doesn't do anything special either. Very middle of the road game, fun, but not memorable.

I've spent the last couple of weeks binging on Grand Theft Auto 2. It lacks the depth and the 3D graphics of the more well-known titles, but this is still a fantastic game that carries the reckless GTA atmosphere of driving around a city, wreaking havoc, and getting rewarded for it.

There's some arcade game influence. You have lives. Money is little more than a score. You need to earn a certain amount of money to go to the next level. There are ways to multiply your earnings, but you rarely need to spend money, and once you've completed a few missions you'll never be strapped for cash again. The method of saving the game is quite archaic and feels as though it was thrown in at the last minute, although this is certainly not a game you can finish in one sitting. There are three levels all with the same goal. Get lots of money. Technically you could do this by doing whatever you like. You get a small amount of money for killing someone, and for ramming your car into another. If you find a tank you could get enough cash very quickly without having to complete a single mission because running your tank over cars gives you a fuckton of money, especially with a high multiplier. Then there are the "kill frenzies" which give you a weapon with infinite ammo (temporarily) with the goal of killing X amount of people in Y amount of time. But the main point of the game is to impress the three gangs that rule the city and complete their seven missions. To earn the respect of the gang leaders you have to slaughter the members of another gang in a rock/paper/scissors style system. Getting maximum respect means the gang members will help you out in shooting muggers and the cops. Getting minimum respect means the gang members will be out to kill you. Even if you're in a vehicle. They have the power to immediately know which car you are in. With clever engineering (or blind luck in my case) you can get high respect for two gangs, meaning that you're safe in most of the city.

The missions are pretty repetitive. Most of them are of the form "Drive to point A, then to point B, then to point C" with some potential obstacles such as cops or rival gangs attacking you. Most of the remaining missions involve killing a bunch of gang members, sometimes on your own, sometimes with a retinue of fellow gang members to help you out. Funnily enough the NPCs have a wider field of vision than the player does. And they aim better. However there are a handful of very creative and fun missions that go against the norm. Despite the general repetitiveness of the game, it never ceases to be fun. I soon became addicted. Once I started playing, I was unable to stop for a number of hours. The controls are very smooth (except for the rare occasions you have to platform on rooftops) and it's very satisfying to drive at maximum speeds or gun a bunch of people down. Some of the later missions have an epic feel about them, having to walk over long and winding walkways to blow up a generator in a power plant while guards chase you down. Or the insanely hard mission where you have five minutes to steal a SWAT van, then a Special Forces car, then an army tank. The only way to do this is to get the police meter to maximum and somehow survive while pilfering their best vehicles.

It's not a perfect game. The overhead 2D perspective limits your frontal vision significantly, making it impossible to react when you're driving at high speeds and the road you're on comes to a dead end. Either you drive at max speed and drive into brick walls a lot, or you drive at half speed and give yourself a chance to weave in and out of traffic like a pro. I did a bit of both. The jump mechanic is a bit finnicky. The ability to jump over cars (or vans or buses) is a simple but effectic mechanic that makes navigating on foot easy and stops you from getting stuck between vehicles. However jumping over gaps is very finnicky and it's very easy to just fall short and go splat on the concrete. The biggest flaw with the game is the flamethrower. It's broken as fuck. You get touched by a pixel of the flame and you're dead in seconds. No matter how much armor/health you have, your health rapidly drops down to zero and there's nothing you can do about it. In the second and third levels some of the gang members get flamethrowers. It's OK if you're in a car, but on foot, the only risk-free solution is to inch forward and shoot the enemies when they are barely on screen, out of range of their flames. The end of the game is an anticlimax in classic arcade/NES style. You finish the third level, head to the exit, you get a basic screen that says "game completed". Maybe there's a credit screen and something more. but my game froze at that point

If you can handle 2D graphics and you like GTA games, you can't go wrong with this.

So the gauntlet was laid down by FROM Software to end their 1st Dark Souls 3 DLC with one of the best boss fights ever and what do they do? They nearly match the intensity with the FIRST boss fight of this new DLC, HOLY SHIT. That was 20 minutes of absolute goodness and MUCH LIKE the last boss of the Dark Souls 3 DLC, my jaw dropped when the swerve came in. I shoulda known, shoulda known better. But I got the "swerve" on the 2nd try because that's how I roll. That whole boss took me all of my 14 estus flasks and I was about to pop an ember as an emergency procedure but I didn't need to.

Not even done with the DLC but I need to take the night for that epic fight to not be overwhelmed by the new area. This DLC is gonna be so good.

I need it after the letdown that was the Gravity Rush 2 DLC....I mean it was free I guess but it just was so underwhelming ya know.

Finished up Wildlands, at it's base, I'd almost give it an 8, but all of it's problems drop it down to a 6.

First and foremost, holy shit is the world design just bad. So many LOOOOOONG impassable walls, you have to run for minutes around them just to get to the ONE entrance, and this might be forgivivable on bases, where it would make sense that they'd only leave one way in and out, but they're EVERYWHERE. There's a certain type of mission in which all of the enemies are in a pre-sealed building until you blow a door off and start the mission, there is positively no reason to surround these missions with impassable fences. So many times the quickest route to the next objective would end up being a decent bit longer just trying to get to the one spot you could enter at. There are spots in the game with tall walls that stretch for several KLM's with absolutely no breaks for no actual reason, those parts just have walls, I assume walls such as these actually exist in the areas, but there's no reason for the game to make them taller than able to be jumped. Also, just terrible formations in general, first of all, endless rocks in the environment that can make even short cuts tedious (especially with the inconsistent bike physics, where sometimes you're barely tap something and shoot off like a bullet and die), but there were numerous times where I'd be running along a mountain to an objective, then I'd find myself in a chasm surrounded on all sides completely stuck. Or I'd be riding the motorcycle and then that would somehow get wedged to where it wouldn't move. These absolutely pointless and bad design choices causes much frustration going from place to place, terrrible.

On the same note as the poor design decisions, inconsistent climbing mechanics, so many areas you should absolutely be able to climb, things I personally would be able to climb in real life, but if the game doesn't want you to, keep-a-runnin'. If it had better climbing mechanics, the previous negative would be practically nullified.

Too much of the same, by the end, I was just running into areas and grabbing items and booking it rather than clearing everything out, way more than is needed, another game that just overstocks the map. Once you fully upgrade rebel abilities, they should just remove rebel missions from the map, and that point they're earning you noting, same for ability points, ended up being a few more than needed.

Radio certainly doesn't help for the tedium, you get 1 station and it plays shit, fork up some cash for a fucking soundtrack, that really saved a lot of Mafia 3's travel time.

And to top it all off, the Ubisoft standard of glitches, especially, and most frustratingly, a glitch that kept a certain thing from registering as complete, so despite collecting absolutely everything in the game, I had one thing at 9/10 and another at 4/5. As a completionist, that's maddening. But there was an assortment of glitches I encountered throughout the game, that thankfully didn't persist too long. A few times I was unable to use the binoculars or drone, and a few times the weapons locked up and I couldn't shoot, and one time both of them at once, I could only move. Also a couple times while I could use the drone, it wouldn't let me sync shot, taking out one of the game's best assessment's for stealth. Also one mission where I had to hijack a airplane, and after it bumped an object, I backed up to even back up on the runway, and at that point it refused to move forward at all at any point, so I had to completely restart the mission.

And while not a glitch, there was one thing the game did that absolutely peeved me, there was a mission where I had to destroy some crates, I swept through like a ghost and decimated everyone on the base, and when I approached the crates and the mission activated, everyone respawned, that just shouldn't fucking happen, so cheap.

Also, holy hell the repeated dialog, I swear I was about ready to send it the fuck back if I had to hear about those legal coca farms one more god damn time, SHUT UP ABOUT THE LEGAL COCA FARMS!

Finally, probably the most consistently frustrating things outside of large impassable walls, VISIBILITY. This is a world absolutely covered in foliage, the problem is, the enemies can see through it, and you can't, even thermal goggles are obscured by the plantlife, so you have to put them on and hope for the faintest glint of a person. This is most frustrating on missions where you have to protect an item for a certain amount of time, first off, they don't take much damage, but then you often can't tell exactly where the damage is coming from to stop it. End up firing blindly and hoping to hit something, often get swarmed from who knows the fuck where (you only get the faintest idea from the radar) before you have time to do anything, you're dropped and it's destroyed, or it's just destroyed by people you can't really see. If you're going to have this sort of vision handicap, the thermal goggle NEED to be able to see through it. You couldn't use the plants for cover, and you couldn't see them for shit when they were in them, and the map was positively COVERED in it, fantastic.

I enjoyed the game, it did most things well, shooting was rather fun, always fun to sweep through a base with surgical precision, just marching through dropping foes left and right. The basic layout was cool, characters were well made enough, story was solid, just so many issues to hold it back. Like I said, damn near an 8, but frustration drops it to a 6.

With me on break from Horizon (Simply, I waited so long for it and I want to make the game last), the little time that I've been gaming lately has gone to Kingdom Hearts. The last time I played Kingdom Hearts was probably back in 2011. Oh boy how rusty I am at the game. I struggled to find the needed food on the islands, and it took much longer than it should have. The same can be said about part of my time in Wonderland. The Trickmaster gave me tons of fits. Since last night, I've been able to knock out both the Deep Jungle and Olympus Coliseum. Should be able to finish the game by the end of the week.

Started Andromeda, it is a really good game, but aside from some wonky animations, there is one critical flaw: automatic cover. Cover should always be manual, there's not even a crouch button, so taking cover is 100% up to the game, I'd say a good 60-70% of the damage I'm taking is the game refusing to take cover. It's maddening, especially consider the enemies can often kill you much quicker than you can kill them, even on normal your life drains incredibly rapidly, so keeping in the line of fire until the game chooses certainly causes problems.

Andromeda has had me hooked since I got it.

I'd agree with Rags on the cover thing, it's super annoying when you want to cover but Ryder just won't

A lot of it I like though, I like the addition of the forward stations and changing your squad and load out mid-planet during missions depending on what you'll need is great. Loving exploring in the Nomad too, although not a huge fan of either Elaaden or Voeld.

Well, I'll be revisiting Andromeda at a later date, I got a mission breaking glitch that took the wind out of my sails for the game, I was too deep in to restart, but not deep enough that I cared to keep going, I'll check it again in a year or two when it has a few patches under it's belt. It was a good deal of fun except for the cover, just technical issues really holding it back. Also, it might just be me, but I much preferred the mining from Mass Effect 2, where you sweep the world off planet, it is infinitely more tedious to drive the NOMAD around terrain looking for the minerals.

So, I started in on Yooka Laylee, it's pretty much right where I imagined it would be, it doesn't hit the highs of Kazooie, but it's still a solid and enjoyable platformer. One thing so far that's a dud, is Retrorex, I only played his first game, but it controlled like dogshit and was super tedious, hopefully the others are better. Another irksome thing are the races, you need to play perfectly to have any hope of winning, literally the second race the butterflies are so far apart that you don't have enough energy to get to them, miss one butterfly, and you lose (never catch up), which becomes an issue because the butterflies could be tempermental on being collected, sometimes it'd seem like you'd fly right through them. Luckily one of the earliest Tonics (you can equip a single tonic at a time for a gameplay buff) was power bar drains slower, which made quick work of the race afterwards. It does have a bit of the Tooies, where it's not exactly the most intuitive world design at times, but I'm still enjoying the hell out of it.

I picked up Yooka Laylee today myself, just exploring the first world but it's a major nostalgia rush, the humour is the same, the obvious yet still funny names "Trouser Snake"

Quiet day tomorrow so i'm looking forward to putting a solid few hours in.

Finished up Yooka Laylee, it was really fun, definitely hits all the right nostalgic notes. Two things though, first off, holy fuck, the Retro Rex arcade games are terrible, boring as hell and go on WAY too long, only one of them I didn't have a problem with was the one that tossed out feathers and you ran around collecting them. Also, the final boss was a bit drawn out, so many times it was like "Surely THIS is the final hit." and the fucker would go into yet another phase, and the final phase is kind of a bitch. But other than that, I really enjoyed it, not enough to break onto my instant classic list, but I mostly enjoyed it start to finish. Casino level was pretty bleh though, a common complaint I share.

After that I moved onto Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero, this one takes some time to unfold, kinda tedious until you unlock some new moves and upgrades, but once it gets going, really great throwback to games of yesteryear, forms all work well (though they could have left the mouse out entirely), fun, fluid, enjoyed myself 100%. Again, not enough to be an instant classic, but enough that I'll return to it some day.

And then after I beat those, I'm FINALLY onto Yakuza 0, it was a day 1 buy I haven't touched because the year has been so front loaded with releases. So far it's dependable as Yukuza always is (including good ol' Kamurocho), great story, sharp gameplay, loving it. Oddly enough, not really feeling Kiryu very much, I kinda think his 3rd style doesn't mesh well with his other 2, and it's just not feeling as sharp; granted, it a prequel, so I'm seeing if maybe later in the game he unfolds into the Kaz I know and love. That being said Majima is a blast, granted I haven't seen his 3rd style, so I don't know how well that'll mesh, but his first 2 are an absolute blast, Thug and Slugger mesh perfectly for the brutal playful style I'd expect from Majima.

I'm kind of disappointed in the change to weapon system, because the previous games, you could equip a weapon to each direction, but now with the style system, you can only equip 1 weapon at a time, which means you don't get as much variation in switching through weapons throughout combos. Would have been nice if they worked the style system in with the previous weapon system, because then fights could be really insane. Also wish it switched more smoothly between styles, there's a slight disruption of combat when you go from one style to the next.

But still, it's great as Yakuza always see, see how it shakes out as the game continues.

I might pick up Yooka Laylee myself, mostly cause I should probably buy a couple of new games, for when my nephew visits.

I had problems with this at first, but after a little practice finding cover has become second nature for me now. Basically whatever your trying to hide behind should be at least slightly higher than your waist, and you have to make sure your pressed ALL the way into it. It's similar to Mass Effect 1's cover but a little less forgiving.

Also if your gun isn't drawn, you won't take cover. Found that out the hard way.

Also when it comes to mining with the Nomad, I just take what I can get when I'm riding around to wherever I'm going. Trying to clear the nodes entirely is WAY too frustrating.

Still playing an old-school game here ... Guild Wars 2 (Tarnished Coast server). I've remained with Guild Wars 2 mainly due to the people in the guilds that I am a member of.

Got Majima's 3rd style, and it pretty much makes him my favorite character of the series to play as, all 3 styles are brutal and frantic, just everything you'd want from Majima. Just lightning fast slaughter in all 3 of his styles.

Got stuck on side activities today, beat the Fantazy Zone and Outrun missions on the checklist (did Space Harrior yesterday), cleared all of Majima's fighting styles, and for the last chunk of the night got stuck at the disco. I breezed right through Easy and Normal on the songs, then one shotted the first song on hard and thought "These aren't so tough." Spent the next 3 hours playing and only beat one more song, before finally it got too late so I made myself quit. What's a bitch is even once I do this shit, I'll have to do it again when I get back to Kiryu to cross them off his list, as those are one of the things not shared amongst them.

EDIT: Next song took me about another hour and a half, but the final two didn't take me very long at all. Still 3 of the 5 songs pretty much took me as long a piece as Normal and Easy took me combined, and I gotta do that shit again with Kiryu. Fuck. At least I can focus on beating things up as Majima.

You know, I really did wanna complete the list from Yakuza 0, and tonight I realized I haven't the faintest fuck on how to play Mahjong. I have absolutely no understanding of what I'm looking at, even reading through the rules just made me kind of dizzy. I feel like a toddler trying to read for the first time. So, looks like those aren't getting checked off.

Yeah, fuck Mahjong. I hope they cut that out from trophies in future installments

( ?_?) - 97% of PW suddenly think Michael Cole is awesome. If you're part of the 3% that still thinks he is an annoying tool, copy & paste this into your sig.

And I really hate the "Earn such-and-such on whatchamacallit" tasks, because what they really are is "walk away from the table with so-and-so in profits" tasks, so you have to keep breaking up gameplay, because it only counts when you leave the table with more money than you walked up with, not just winning that set amount while playing the game, so everytime you win a million or two, you're best to stop, exit, and go back in and start fresh to count that money towards your total. Just totally throws off momentum of gameplay.

Also don't like the change they made for blackjack, maybe it's so players can't just money farm the blackjack table, I don't know
, but it just adds further tedium to earning the total. You start with a max bet of 1000, and then if you win you go to 3000, then 5000, then 10000...but as soon as you lose you go back down to 1000. Wouldn't even be as bad if it set you back to the previous level, but you have to start back at the lowest hand. I don't see why it matters anyway, since it's much easier to money farm Mr. Shakedown than blackjack ever was.

Finished the main casino games at least, no more of that nonsense.

Also, the Catfights are terrible. Could have done without those completely. Such a great game, so many off design choices.

I did love the real estate side quest. I made basically 95% of my money there

The hostess bar was cool too

I earned most of my money farming Mr. Shakedown, once you get a good shotgun, buy 3-4 of 'em, and he's no trouble. Now he drops 1-2 (I've gotten as high as 3 on occasion) billion per fight. Anytime I needed some quick cash, I just ran out and dropped him a quick one.

I got Yooka Laylee in the mail yesterday from Gamefly. I'm scratching my head. I just don't see what you all see in it. An hour in and I already have it packaged up to send back to Gamefly.

Were you a fan of Banjo? Seems like a love letter to those that were.

I played it a few years ago. Thought it was pretty fun. This seems like they tried an awful lot to be like it. Stripped of any real fun and adventure.

How do you feel about the genre in general? Thought it did really well at capturing the feel of the old school platformer collect-a-thons, and with the exception of Retro-Rex, did most things at the very least competently to very well. It's not a classic, but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Also, found out today I've been money farming Mr. Shakedown the hard way, I was happy with getting a billion or two a time, but if you LOSE to him, and then go beat him, you damn near double your wallet. Whatever I had when I lost to him jumped up to 28 billion, 28 billion went to 45 billion, 45 went to 69, that's as far as I got because I found it out right before I quit, but I plan of milking the fuck out of that once I get Kiryu's 4th style to power up the hell out of him late in the game.
