One of the fights I'm looking forward to the most that is coming up is on January 15th, one of my favorite young prospects coming up in the UFC, 24 year old Yair "El Pantera" Rodriguez will be taking on the legend BJ Penn. So what if BJ is 38 years old, so what if he's like 1-5-1 in his last 7 UFC fights, this is still a really interesting matchup. Rodriguez is an exciting young fighter that does stuff like this, and this, and this. Will BJ even make it to the fight without failing a drug test or getting injured? Will he turn back the clock and put it on the youngster or is going to come in and do the job and put him over? We will find out on January 15th. This card is almost certain to change before this show happens so come here to this thread and report the changes as soon as you find out about them. Post anything related to this event or BJ Penn or anything you want right here... in this thread!

Mods can we get a Vbookie for this(If it's in it's own thread that's fine, I'd wait until a day or two before the show, or even the day of the show) and get this stickied as soon as 207 is over this weekend?

I am pretty apprehensive about this one, but only because the last couple of Penn fights have fallen through.

I watched the Ultimate Fighter where Yair won for his weight class and he is pretty entertaining to watch. I hope we see precision KO artist Yair but "spam all the cool moves" Yair is fun too. LOL

I have to say the first Latin America TUF was my favorite season of the show, such a great cast of fighters with great backstories, the fights were great too. Yair is one of my favorite fighters in the UFC.

Damn! Even though BJ is way past it this was still a great win for Yair at this stage of his career. Would love to see El Pantera vs Kron Gracie.

Were they just trying to embarrass Penn? I mean, I get wanting to fight again, but putting him up against an explosive young talent? Holy fuck was that lopsided.

They've booked a lot of stuff like this through the years, they got a young guy they want to push so they bring in an established veteran with a name value that people recognize, but WAAAAY past their prime, Hughes vs Royce Gracie, Franklin vs Shamrock come to mind, shortly after those fights those guys were headlining PPV's that did six figure buys. For Rodriguez this was a big night, on the night of the NFC playoffs on Fox where they are advertising the event, he needed a win over a name like this. Hardcore fans know how past it BJ is but not everybody is hardcore fans, you just got people that recognize that name for being a champion at one time in big time fights against GSP and Matt Hughes(like my dad for example, doesn't know the difference between UFC and Bellator, still asks me how Chuck Liddell is doing every once in a while ). They've got their own proven formula to create stars, they are trying it with El Pantera. I actually thought BJ could have did better than this since Yair doesn't really look to have any type of ground game. Pretty good performance for Yair to dominate BJ though, former multi-champion and hall of famer, I think Yair needed a win like this. He got a great spotlight put on him here with this fight, looking at the 145 lb roster right now I think this was the best possible matchup for him on a show like this and he made the most of it and came through looking good. Would love to see him work his way into the title picture, he's still kinda young and green though, I don't think he's ready for guys like Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo just yet.
