    No doubt.

Fale winning would have been detrimental to the product big time, and a waste of a chance to finally elevate Shibata.

Wonder who he will challenge now?

He's already challenged Okada. He called him out immediately

I don't think we have ever had an Okada Shibata match, certainly not since Okadas return in 2011/2012

    Awesome.

TBH I only found out through a pic on my FB feed (that one pic of him sitting down cross legged next to the cup).

Gonna watch the shows from the 19th and 20th in a bit.

Finally it's come. After a year of being the NEVER Openweight champion, a year of being kept away from the top guys, raising his stock with great match after great match with talent from NJPW's midcard and talent from around the world, his time has come. Katsuyori Shibata has earned his stripes and made it to the top! Now that I know the tournament winner, I can understand their booking. Shibata overcoming the big bad Fale in the final (and kicking out of his finisher) is a much better ending than him beating EVIL, a guy he feuded with and defeated about three months ago. Not to mention he had one of the toughest draws in the cup, beating Suzuki and Ishii along the way. Now I'm looking forward to Shibata beating Okada, becoming the new ace, and holding the top belt for a very long time. In my dreams. It will still be an awesome match though.

    Links:

Final: Bad Luck Fale vs Katsuyori Shibata: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5f...-shibata_sport

None of the matches were particularly outstanding but all above average.

I think the right guy took this. Shibata was super impressive throughout this and Okada vs Shibata is something I want to see now.

I love Shibata's Choke / Kick finisher on Fale. Never seen that before, but works so damn well. Also from a storytelling point of view, so much you can do with adding that little extra move to a sleeper finisher. That crucifix powerbomb to sleeper counter was amazing too. Given WWE's love with faux MMA, surprised Shibata was not one of the guys they tried to grab during the cruiserweight classic.

Amazing selling of the choke by Shibata and Ishii too. For a "rest hold" that looked fucking brutal.

As much as his chances of winning were much higher if he faced Naito, I still cannot wait to see this

My three biggest NJPW dream matches have been, for a long time, Omega vs Ibushi, Suzuki vs Shibata, and Okada vs Shibata

We have had one and it was disappointing, the other is almost confirmed via Kenny Omega podcast, but I had given up on Shibata vs Okada

    I am hyped!!

Shibata's sleeper hold into the Penalty Kick has been his finish for a long time. He wins almost all of his matches with it. The way Shiabta uses it is great. He's so tenacious with the sleeper hold, he keeps grabbing it again and again until the opponent is unable to stop the PK. Usually he pins people after the PK but occasionally he goes back to the hold and puts them to sleep. He did it against someone else quite recently. May have been Ospreay. It will be interesting to see how Okada handles that.

The Shibata Ishii series, Shibata vs Honma from G1 24, Shibata vs Tanahashi from G1 23(or 24?),Shibata vs Goto from a few years ago, i forget the year but they had a couple of masterpieces in a great personal feud.

Also Shibata vs Ibushi from G1 25

Also, if you want to see the ultimate Shibata bad ass moment, check out the NJPW vs Noah multi man tag match from the final day of G1 26. He came out of that match looking like a Demi God

I recommend Shibata vs AJ Styles and vs Naito from G1 Climax 26, and his matches vs Ishii from WK10 and New Beginning 2016. Also his match vs Akiyama in Wrestle-1 from 2005 is excellent. There's many more I could list.

I love the absurdity of Shibata's "gimmick". He embraces the blandness. THE WRESTLER - LOL. Would've made a great 4th entry into ROH's Clone Wars.

    Sakura Genesis card is up

    Okada vs Shibata
    Goto vs ZSJ
    KUSHIDA vs Takahashi
    War Machine vs Tencozy
Suzuki Gun vs Gedo and Jado

Omega, Ishii, Naito, Tana, Ibushi are all stuck in Tag matches which kind of sucks, but those top 4 matches should all be excellent. The tag division needs War Machine

I don't know why Shibata gets so much criticism for being super serious. He's hardly the only stoic Japanese wrestler in the world. Even in the same company you have the likes of Ishii and EVIL and SANADA and Makabe and Tenzan and Fale. Would they be grinning ear to ear if they had won the cup?

That trophy is awesome and so is his pose. Shibata is the man.

To be fair, when he pinned Fale, the emotion came out for about 3 seconds and he clearly looked overjoyed.

The next NJPW show is Sakura Genesis (formerly Invasion Attack). It takes place on April 9th, the Sunday after Wrestlemania. Thank fuck for that. Having NXT TakeOver and Wrestlemania and an NJPW show all on the same weekend would be a nightmare

    IWGP Heavyweight Championship
Kazuchika Okada (c) vs Katsuyori Shibata
After many years of hard work in the upper midcard, winning fans over with his dedication and no-nonsense style, Shibata sealed his ticket to the main event by winning the NJPW Cup. He unsurprisingly declared Okada as his next opponent. Smart booking has kept these wrestlers away from singles action for over three years, making this big clash a dream match for some and a highly-anticipated match for everyone. Shibata has laid many of the world's top wrestlers to waste in his singles run, but Okada is on a much higher level than anyone Shibata has faced. Okada is the heavy favourite, but don't count Shibata out. Okada lost the same title to Naito at the same event in 2016. Anything is possible.
    IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship
    Hiromu Takahashi (c) vs KUSHIDA
A rematch from Wrestle Kingdom. KUSHIDA made his challenge after Takahashi retained against Taguchi in March. Takahashi has so far proven that he is the new king of the juniors, his three championship matches all being instant classics. Will KUSHIDA be able to reclaim his throne?
    NEVER Openweight Championship
Hirooki Goto (c) vs Zack Sabre Jr.
Zack Sabre Jr. made a statement in his NJPW debut by joining Suzuki-gun and defeating Shibata for RPW's British Heavyweight Championship in old bold and successful move. Sabre followed that up by pinning NEVER Openweight Champion Goto in a tag team match. Thus Sabre will receive his second championship match in the company, hoping to acquire his fourth singles title (he also holds the Evolve and PWG championships). Perhaps he's trying to beat Ultimo Dragon's record?
    IWGP Tag Team Championship
Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan (c) vs War Machine

Hiroshi Tanahashi, Juice Robinson, Ryusuke Taguchi & Ricochet vs Tetsuya Naito, SANADA, EVIL & BUSHI

Toru Yano & Tomohiro Ishii vs Kenny Omega & Bad Luck Fale

    IWGP Junior Tag Team Championship
Taichi & Yoshinobu Kanemaru (c) vs Jado & Gedo

Roppongi Vice & YOSHI-HASHI vs Minoru Suzuki, El Desperado & TAKA Michinoku

Tiger Mask, Tiger Mask W, Yuji Nagata & Togi Makabe vs Chase Owens, Yujiro Takahashi, Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa

David Finlay, Jushin Thunder Liger & Manabu Nakanishi vs Katsuya Nitamura, Tomoyuki Oka & Hirai Kawato

Suzuki-gun's impact lasted all of one show where they lost all their title matches. Now they're putting all but one of their eggs in the Zack Sabre Jr. basket, and the other egg in the junior tag team championship basket, which nobody really gives a fuck about. Killer Elite Squad have disappeared from in-ring action and the leader is slumming it in the undercard like a jabroni (then again, so are Omega, Tanahashi and Naito).
