Default Is John Cena the Lex Luger of 1995?

After Luger's return to WCW in 1995, he acted as a sort of tweener character, not making his allegiances known, except for his long-time friendship with Sting. He feuded with faces and heels and always had a mixed crowed reaction. Cena is kind of a heel to the smarks that want a heel turn he is pretty much telling them FU and he is a face with the kids. I dont think Cena will ever reach Lugers level, but I think this is where they are going.

Reach Luger's level in what way? Cena is a much bigger star than Luger ever was.

I love Luger, but Cena is a much bigger star than him. The one thing I'd say for Luger is that if I wanted to show anyone who didn't watch wrestling what a wrestler looked like it would be Luger. Luger had one of best moments ever in wrestling when he defeated Hogan on Nitro. A moment like last night from RAW was great for what it was, but it doesn't even compare to when Luger won the title. That night had emotion, drama and action. Last night just had emotion.

Lugar title win on Nitro was one of the top World Title wins ever. THe only ones I rate to it are Hart at wm10, CM Punk at MITB and Warrior at WM6

1995 Lex Luger and 2013 John Cena I would say no.

Cena is on a level of mixed reaction like no other in history

I never cared for Luger. Frankly he couldn't hold Cena's jock. I see where you are going with your comparison but I think you are off the mark.

Luger was HUGE in 1997. Was the biggest active babyface in wrestling in 1997.
DVD Clearout: Raw, Smackdown, Nitro, Thunder, ECW TV, TNA Impact. MUST GO. PM me for details

I kind of see what you're saying (except the part where you imply that Luger is a bigger star than Cena. There are argugably only three men bigger stars than Cena.) and you do make good observation here. The only difference is that WCW announcers treated Lex like a heel while the WWE still treats Cena like a face. As a matter of fact, the only character that was really similar to late 95 to early 96 Luger was late 95 to early 96 Diesel. Diesel was definitely a heel but at the same time he still stayed loyal to his friends, who were babyfaces in HBK and Razor. It's hard for me to explain because I am bad at explaining anything.

I do see Cena becoming a Luger/Diesel like character towards the end of the year. I honestly think this man will leave Mania 30 as a heel. And I hope he becomes more of troll throughout the year. Similar to how he was last night. I just hope they turn Punk face by then because if they both end up being heels, Punk is screwed. I see Creative and fans looking at Cena as more of priority. And they should.

Well I don't like Cena or Luger but John Cena is the bigger star by a mile.

I would say Cena is closer to where Hogan was in 96 in WCW before the heel turn as far as crowd reactions. Hogan was getting the same type of mixed, or 60/40 type reactions(sometimes just strait up boo'd).

Luger played pro football, so you can forget he has all those fans too.

I'm personally not seeing the connection between the two.

John's case is very unique. His character, the unstoppable superhero, was created by a man who hates the universe so he created his own to control, and is absolutely livid about the reactions his creation gets. It undermines his ego. So he fights back by having The Toy (in this case, John Cena) doing exactly what causes those split reactions ten times more obnoxiously, and thus ensuring a never-ending cycle.

I'm finding it hard to accept The Old Man would ever tweak John substantially. He'll die first IMO.

Lex Luger is better than John Cena.

To be fair, Sting wasn't "active" as he didn't wrestle a match until the end of '97. I assume that's what Heartbreak Kid meant by active.

To be honest, Luger has never come close to being on Cena's level, except in 1997. As soon as Sting returned to the ring, he lost steam.

To be honest he was also the top guy in the WWE when he slammed Yokozuna and was headlining Summerslam
