    Default Nostalgia vs Current

This is a thread to discuss on whether or not us as fans prefer nostalgia over the current product, or rather, instead of WWE creating a whole new batch of stars, would you rather just have them bring back the attitude era superstars instead?

I think for the most part, I want the old days instead if what's to come. Even as early as the "Evolution" days of the WWE. Maybe add CM Punk, Bryan, and Ryback to the mix, other than that I'd much rather see "old WWE" on my television.

Well I think 90% of posters would want the "old days." The attitude era specifically as there has never been a time like it. It was the WWE's most successful period because they had their back up against the wall with WCW trying to put them out of business. Vince decided to go a completely different direction and it worked, because they had the stars at that time to make it work.

Not sure why we woulx want to bring back all of those old broken down stars of the late 90's...you wouldnt see very many 5 star matches, thats for sure.

An appearance here and there by an old school guy would be cool, Austin vs Punk would be excellent.

I would just like to see the talent of today be able to fully utilize their potential. Remove the PG rating for Mondays and let them shine. It would be a more refreshing product. Unfortunately, until they face some stiff competition again...I dont see Vince making that move.

Some fans hold the older product in a higher spot because they grew up with it and it was the beginning of their love for pro wrestling, unfortunately some fans go overboard and don't give the current product a chance and spend their time bitching about "the good ol' days." Or they actually stop watching.

I'm satisfied with the current product and the match quality has been outstanding this year, especially on PPV. Do I prefer 1997? Of course, but I'm smart enough to know those guys are gone or in their final days...and that's fine because I've given the current product chances and I enjoy it...and if I didn't, I wouldn't be on the internet bitching about it. Those who do are the fans I dislike the most. All of your favorite wrestling has been archived and released, instead of shitting on a current product people enjoy, pop in a dvd and relive that shit. I do, and I can still enjoy 2012 and not expect it to be 1992...it's really easy if you try.

I do love a good mix of nostalgia in my wrestling for the record, just as long as it doesn't go overboard...which WWE has done a tad bit this year.

I don't know if any of this resembles a complete thought but it sounded good in my head, hopefully nobody in this thread is dumber for have listened to it, and if they are...may God have mercy on my soul.

If the WWE took the same approach as they did in the Attitude era (focused on the card top to bottom & only used 'current' stars on top of all their big shows) I don't think fans would care as much.

Or they probably would, fans have complained every single era about the same old crap.

Would people prefer to see older guys? Probably, yeah. But eventually those older guys would just deteriorate to the point where you couldn't feasibly have them on national TV anymore, and then what do you have? A roster of young guys nobody cares about because you spent all your time on the old guys they cared about.

Good god, no more attitude era please. I want good matches. I love todays WWE. The attitude era was just a blip, professional wrestling has been PG a lot longer then it's been "attitude"

The world has changed and stuff we saw in the attitude era would no longer be acceptable. The world has moved on, wrestling fans need to do the same. What if no-one gave the attitude era a chance and just shit on it like so many of you shit on the PG era. It gets so fucking annoying.

Fuck the old timers. I've got a DVD player. I've got a VCR. I'll watch that. During the Attitude Era did we all whine and reminisce about the 70s and 80s? No. We should stop and look forward. Nostalgia has become so bad that WWE have been forced to run on it to meet demand at times. Stop it.

    Move the bloody fuck on.

It's much more to it than people just wanting old guys back or for it to magically be1998 again.

For a lot of people its much easier to blame fans missing the Attitude Era style of WWE, on nostalgiaa, because that's easier for them to except than the fact that WWE programing just isn't as good anymore.

There was the same feeling in the early to mid 90's where people tuned out and generally were less into WWE than they were a decade earlier, ppl missed the old days then too.

Then the Attitude Era rolled around and ppl forgot all about the 80's and were even crazier about WWE than ever.

It wasn't because things were the same as the 80's because they weren't, but it had the same qualities, great characters and generally great writing, and because like the 80's WWE was able to tap into what pop cuture of the 90's was all about.

Nowadays WWE isn't really trying any of that...its had little success in building new stars and struggles to come up with interesting storylines.

Find better characters and write better stories and ppl will love WWE again until then ppl will always perfer the good ole days when WWE actually did that stuff.

The hilarious thing about this debate is that one of the reasons the Attitude era thrived is because they took the product in a direction and got completely away from the cornerstones of previous eras.

    Fuck nostalgia.

People pretty much want a reason to tell their friends why they watch wrestling. That Guy is drinking beer, those girls are hot/in Playboy, and they curse a lot. It's easier to explain than saying, "Hey, I like watching grown men pretend to fight".

I honestly haven't watched anything from WWE's past in ages. It would've only been as far back as 2006, too.

I'm perfectly satisfied living in the now.
I'm launching a pre-emptive strike on the "IWC and indy marks overhyped Sami Zayn. He's not that great." sentiment that will inevitably arise.

We grew up with the Attitude Era but anyone who is a true fan of the Attitude Era knows what made it the best - the creation of new stars, guys breaking the ceiling and becoming the very best in the business.

So no, I don't want that old thing back. Let's move on and help the new guys get over because they are just as talented but are unfortunate to be in this toxic climate of lethargy and substandard pandering through a child oriented product. This is pro effin wrestling man.

We old guys had our time. It was awesome, but it's time to let these kids of today have their era. WWE needs to focus on the next generation.

Sure, cause that's why wrestling was so popular in the 80's right?

It was all the beer drinking by Hogan, Miss Elizabeth's playboy shoots and all the cursing by Ultimate Warrior, right?

    Wrong!

Sayin ppl liked Attitude better because it was vulgar is just a cop out...ppl liked Attitude Era better because it was just better TV than today, period.

Ask ppl who they're favorite wrestlers ever were and generally you'll here names like Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold, Rock, Rowdy Piper, Road Warriors, Macho Man, and Undertaker.

None of which are from this era...the only guy ppl might say from now usually is only Cena.

That's why ppl perfer past eras over this one, simple as that.

Fans of this era that were the same age as people that will defend their era of choice will be saying the exact same things as some of you in a few years.

Bias is bias...so anyone who's just defending the era they grew up in is just bias and doesn't really matter.

But for someone like me who doesn't have any bias I can clearly this era isn't as good as the mid 80'sor late 90's.

My era that I REALLY got into wrestling was the early to mid 90's and I'd take the 80's or late 90's oveer my era, just like I would take 2010-202 over say 2005-2009.

Seeing as how I still watch now, I would gladly take a better current era if the WWE could produce one.

Bias over eras one grew up in is just for silly fanboys and really shouldn't have any real barring on alegit debate about quality wrestling.

A little of both. I want younger guys like Punk, Bryan and Ziggler and want the product to improve. I also like seeing Taker, HHH, Brock and The Rock on occasion. And I don't wanna see the Attitude Era again, seen that. Just like seeing my fave wrestlers. But I want to see fresh stars too. Right now, the older guys are still better to me except for Punk, he's the only one I consider GREAT right now.

In terms of 3-5* star matches on a consistent basis, I say this era kicks every other era's ass.

What I do miss however is when all the belts meant something and not just the WWE title, and when tag teams were awesome. So I dunno what I prefer.

( ?_?) - 97% of PW suddenly think Michael Cole is awesome. If you're part of the 3% that still thinks he is an annoying tool, copy & paste this into your sig.
