What makes the top guy a top guy?

I have been thinking about this for a while, what gives that top that something extra special to make him the best?

Coz it can't be wrestleing ability as Hogan, Rock, Austin, Cena aren't exactly the best wrestlers in the world, and it can't be mic skills alone as Cena isn't the strongest in the world at this I always thought Brett Hart was a bit wooden on the mic and still is. I'm not sure the undertaker has ever been the "top guy" and the same goes for HBK and HHH always right up there but never led the company. Charisma the Rock and Hogan have it in spades but Austin never struck me as the most charismatic, so is it boiled down to the look and the gimmick as Austin and Cena seem to have that nailed on.

So now as a theory look at CM Punk, charisma? Yes, Mic skills? Yes, wrestleing ability? Yes, gimmick? I would say yeah probably, but will he ever be the "top guy"? No and I don't think he has what it takes and I don't know why?

Thoughts not on who will be the next guy but what it takes to become him?

It's combination of a few key things that give you the top spot in the company.

Mic Skills - If you can't get a reaction from the crowd when you're talking on the mic, there's no way you're going to be used in main event promos.

Fanbase - In order to be at the elite level, you need to garnish a reaction from the audience every time you're in the arena. Whether you're a heel or babyface, you need to get the audience behind you.

Merchandise - Once you have a healthy fanbase, your chances at bringing in big buys of merchandise are extremely high. If you're getting all your stuff sold and the audience members are wearing your t-shirts/wristbands/hats, your boss will love you because of the money and you'll be at the top.

The Look - Every wrestler needs the look. If you know how to smile and look happy for the audience, or know how to look disgusted at the audience's actions, and you can combine this with the things above, you have a high chance of reaching the top level.

Wrestling - The only wrestling you need to know in the WWE today is how to throw a guy over your head and punch and kick. No need for submission holds (although if you know a couple it would look good)

Media - You also need to have a good connection with the media. By that, I mean you need to know how to talk to the media and how to promote yourself and the company on television/radio/magazine.

It depends what you refer to as look. You can either be big and muscley like Goldberg, Cena, Hogan etc., or you could have the ladies all over you. Shawn Michaels was wanted by all the women, he had the looks. As for Bret Hart, he was never the handsome bloke.

Oh my god, Cena is going for the Attitude Adjustment, which is really a direct ripoff of Lesnar's F-5. Oh my god, reversed! Cena is on the mat again. Cena builds momentum. Cena hits Five Knuckle Shuffle. The Attitude Adjustment is reversed 13 more times. Cena wins via STF or AA!! Every match. Cena has roughly 9 different maneuvers. Every match is virtually the same. He's not a profound wrestler. He carries little mystique. His promos are the same ass-kissing preambles every week. Yawn.

Cena needs to completely reinvent himself.

They have to be down to earth, so the fans can connect with them.

Sure, at times, a larger than life enigma connects with the fans (Hogan, Savage, Warrior, Undertaker, Rock, Mysterio), but a lot of the top guys were down to earth people, albeit exaggerated, but not enough that they become unrealistic. Shawn Michaels was the heartthrob guys wanted to be and women wanted to be with. Bret Hart was the young guy trying to overcome family troubles to make it. Austin was the beer drinking redneck who beat the shit out of his boss. John Cena was the wigger who stopped being a punk ass kid and grew up and became a man.

These are the characters that connect with the fans, and force people to part with their money to see them.

The top thing ANY wrestling promotion looks for is MONEY! Whoever puts the most asses in seats, has trancendant capabilities, draws ratings, etc. should rightfull y be the top guys. So the guys like Hogan, Austin, Rock, Warrior, Cena, Andre, Dusty, Bruno, etc. deserve to be the top guys. Even if they aren't the most skilled wrestlers. And we have all seen boxing or UFC where the brawler beats the more technically skilled fighter. Technical skills are only ONE FACET of pro wrestling-sports entertainment. U got brawlers, power guys, and high flyers-great athlete types as well.

But u also have a guy like Savage who was a great all around in ring guys AND had that transcendant type charisma promoters love. Or u have a guy like Flair who was a great technician and had epic charisma. U have a great in ring big guy like Taker who had transcendant kind of charisma. These three are very unique and are a rare breed. So these kind of guys deserve of course to be on top and feud with the guys like Hogan, Cena, Dusty, etc. Guys like Flair, Savage. and Taker all have a case to be GOAT and best in the world in this sense.

But then u have great in ring guys like HBK, Bret, Punk, Eddie, Benoit, and Angle who may not be transcendant type guys. But they are over huge with the real wrestling fans. So they deserve the ball too because they give wrestling skill and realism. The most skilled guys in other sports become champions too. So to even the playing field, these guys deserve the ball too. They may not be "THE GUY", but they still deserve world titles. And to real fans, they have the distinction of being the best of the world in their own way. Because they are the best in ring and ALSO get over enough to be a main eventer and challenge the Rocks, Austins, Cenas, etc.

Oh, I agree. I am simply proving a point. It's not about the number of moves, which Cena, contrary to popular belief, has enough of, but it's about how you do them and whether or not the crowd REACTS to them, and whether or not you are marketing yourself properly in the ring, which Cena is.
