Santino Marella Wants World Heavyweight Title

- During an interview with WWE Magazine, Santino Marella revealed that even he though he previously said he was content with his standing in WWE, he now aspires to win a World Title.

"There are only four individual titles on the main roster of WWE, and to be one of four champions on a roster of many is pretty prestigious. I'll continue to keep training and then hopefully one day will win the World Heavyweight Title or the WWE Championship," Marella said. "The fans have always expressed their desire for me to enjoy success against the top guys. It was nice seeing them react to me at Elimination Chamber and to know that they still hope I do well."

When asked which wrestlers backstage don't understand his jokes, he revealed Cody Rhodes and The Miz.

"But that's because they can't laugh at themselves," Marella said. "They'll laugh at someone else, but when it comes to themselves—they take things way too seriously."

I don't care what anyone says that's, that's just a horrible idea it would be like putting it on Eugene or Goldust. I know people say if your not in the WWE to win the top belt then your in the wrong business but I at least hope the people running the E are smart enough never to put either of those belts on Santino Marella of all people.

Well I figured people could discuss whether or not they would like to see Santino Marella with either the WWE Championship or the World Heavyweight Championship... probably should have mentioned that in the first post.

That said, even if out of character, I'm glad Santino feels this way. If there's anybody in the company that doesn't aspire to be the top guy, then they should find a new career.

I actually had an angle which could have built him as a contender for the WWE title about a year back. He had been in that bad car accident and I was going to have him say he saw his life flash before his eyes and realize his only goal was to be WWE Champion. I'd have the belt on ADR going into the Rumble, Santino mentions how he almost won the Royal Rumble the year before and this was his chance to live out his dream, because life was short and he needed to take his life a little more seriously. He'd ultimately lose the match to Alberto, probably by a DQ or screwy finish. He'd cost Alberto the title at Elimination Chamber allowing the two of them to have a good midcard match at Mania to cap off the feud. But then they began the Year of Punk at Survivor Series that year.

Anyway, it's sadly never going to happen, you can only be champion if you are a badass or if you "take things seriously".

They need a gimmick, of a person who comes in and just wants to be paid to fight. He does not give a damn about anything, but his paycheck and he no -sells everything that WWE Universe represents. Not like Brock Lesnar is now, but more Raw.

The guy I'm talking about just happened to be in a bar or something, where he happened to kick about 4 guys ass and the WWE superstars were there and somebody gave him a card to come try out at NXT/FCW. He goes there wrecks havoc and they just say fuck it, and ship him up to the main show to "break him".

He goes to the big shows, just destroys people, and wants nothing but his check. Faces try to talk him down; heel managers try to manipulate him in to being their goon and tell him he'd gain more wealth as a Champion. He wants none of that shit, he just wants to maul people, pick up his check, and leave.

I'm not talking about destroying people like Ryback either, sometime he barely gets the win, but he is just a tough bastard and wants to get paid.

Because to me, I've had the dream of being a pro wrestler for a good chunk of my life, but I never dreamt of being in the mid-card, I dreamt of walking down the ramp at Wrestlemania holding the championship. That's what would complete it to me.

I would love a Santino World Heavyweight Championship reign just as he is and I think it would draw. I wouldn't go as far as WWE Championship under his current gimmick, but the Big Gold one? For sure. I would love every minute of it.

I love the notion that a guy who just happens to be average in the ring as opposed to a great worker and is also a PR machine for the WWE, someone who's deep passion for the business is obvious. Yet they're somehow a joke.

I think there are people that don't want to deal with the pressure of being champion. I could definitely understand a guy wanting to wrestle in the mid-card his whole life because he loves being a wrestler and is making a good paycheck. I think that sounds like a good life.

I just hate the fact Jake the Snake Roddy Piper Million Dollar Man, Perfect, Owen, Razor, Vader never got the WWE title but these jokesters can have multiple reigns.

Because there's a role in this business for a midcard character that isn't a main eventer. Like SOP said, you can make a good living as a midcarder for years. Look at guys like Val Venis, or Colt Cabana, or Spike Dudley, or plenty of others. Those guys are never going to be world champion, but there's still plenty of room for them to carve out a living in this business as a character that can get over and make people care about them or make their opponent look good.

I think everybody thinks it'd be nice to be world champion, but I'd imagine there's a point in most wrestler's lives when they realize "I'm not going to be world champion" and that point isn't when they retire.

But yeah, I agree with you. Look at Scotty 2 Hotty - I think he's gone on record saying he always dreamt of just being in the WWE, not of main eventing - and he got to do that for years and years. Well done to him. I see no reason why he shouldn't have been there just because he didn't want to be the World Champ.

Point being, sometimes great guys can't be champion. And it sucks. But ya can't build a time machine and fix it. But to bury the new generation just because you're bitter about your favorites not getting the recognition you feel they deserve is bullshit. And neither guy you mentioned had multiple reigns.

Exactly. If I was training to become a wrestler, I'd want to be a tag team or a midcard guy. I would like to be WWE Champion for the fame and the added salary, but I'm not confident with public speaking and I don't think I could handle doing all the promotional stuff for the company without getting worn down. I'd want to be a guy like Evan Bourne who is respected as an in ring guy but barely ever has to cut a promo.

He had the talent for it, and earlier in his career it wouldn't have been as ridiculous, but I was referring more to the later aspect of his career (the post Chief Morley run) when he fell into the "hell of a hand" role.

Goldust a man obsessed with Gold and glamour being obsessed with the WWE belt or the Big "GOLD" belt would have been awesome, as for the topic I don't really mind Santino being a World Champion if a good story and a good matches come along with it but if they do it Swagger style count me out.
