That's tough to say. I don't know enough about Summerslam pre-1997 to judge those, but I don't think anyone stands out so clearly for Summerslam. With WrestleMania at least, you could make a case for a few people.
Maybe Cena? He's been involved in some great matches. His matches with Edge, Orton, Nexus, Batista and Punk are all noteworthy.

Eh, I'd probably give it to Cena.
Jericho (2005), Edge (2006), Orton (2007), Batista (2008), WWE/Nexus (2010)
Edit: And BigRed sucks a big one. A BIG ONE.
I say Hulk Hogan. He won every SummerSlam match for those first 4 years, and then goes on to big wins against Shawn Michaels, and Randy Orton in '05 and '06.
just like he's the true "mr wrestlemania" Hulk Hogan is "mr summerslam".
i believe he's the only man to be undefeated at the event. and likely won more "big" matches there than anyone else.

Actually Hulkamania and WrestleMania were exchangeable in pop culture vernacular in the early stages of both movements, so you are on point with the statement. It's arguable that Hulkamania was the reason for the events to even be made to exploit off Hulk Hogan's popularity.

The problem with poor Americans is that “they don’t believe they’re poor, but rather temporarily embarrassed millionaires.”
First one that came to mind was Bret.
Then I considered Cena.
Then I settled on Bret.
Hitman vote from me as well.

Since I had nothing better to do, I did this...
I came up with a scoring system to make this as objective as possible, and then I combed through history to determine who is "Mr. SummerSlam". Below is a rough breakdown of the scoring system I used, and the top ten contenders. I'm sure some may not agree with the scoring system, as it surely isn't perfect... but it definitely gives a general good sense of where some bigger names fall. Anywho, without further ado, I give to you... MR. SUMMERSLAM!

Great job PI - interesting read. Undertaker is a fair number 1.
And even though I am not a fan of his, a case can be made for Randy Orton too.
***Just an interesting fact you reminded me of - Cena and Orton faced each other one on one twice at SS, yet never at Wrestlemania.
***Looking at that also reminded of what a nice run the Warrior had at Summerslam.
Even with all of that math, I'd still giive it to Hitman just on sheer greatness of his matches.
Hell just for his match with Perfect i'd give it too him.
Kinda like how HBK is Mr. Mania despite his fairly poor win loss record, because of the quality of matches.
Although the event itslef isn't really a great showcase as it was from like 88-03 or 04 Imo.
Again, I'm not pretending the scoring system I came up with is perfect or even good... and I'd be willing to go with you in possibly giving Bret the nod as Mr. SummerSlam. I mean, Undertaker gets bypassed for the Mr. WrestleMania title when he probably deserves it more than Shawn Michaels, so why not bypass him for Mr. SummerSlam too? However, I'd put Undertaker's SummerSlam '97 and '98 up there pretty close to Bret Hart's '91 and '92... although, I guess the fact that Bret was in Undertaker's '97 says something. I guess "Mr. Insert Name of Event" titles are a little too gay for Undertaker anyways. I don't know what I'm talking about now... I'm so pooped.

I'd go with.....Bret Hart. Of all SummerSlam pay per views that I have seen he has had the best matches. And by best I mean best from what I enjoyed. Best when discussing wrestling is moot. (For all you guys that take this shit way too seriously.)
Austin from Highway to Hell until 2001 was everything Summer Slam meant to wrestling
