    Lightbulb PW's Photoshop 101

I will personally rep ANYONE who submits something to this page, no matter your skill level, you have something to contribute

    Hey Guys,

Like the title says, we should be helping each other learn more about this fine thing we call Graphics. This is a thread that you can come into to ask a question without fear of rejection. NO QUESTION IS A STUPID QUESTION.

    • How do you re-size images?
    • How do you Cut Images?
    • How do you Flash Banners?

These are just some of the questions that might be overwhelming for someone new to Photoshop as it is a huge program, but don't be scared of it. So if you see that someone did something on a banner and you want to know how, just ask.

Also, This isn't just for asking questions! People who are experienced at PS. Feel free to post:

    • Pointers and tips that others might not know.
    • Names of brush sets that you find particularly nice to work with.
    • Links to Tutorials that have helped you. (Youtube or otherwise)
    • Links to any resources you might have such as; Font sites, PSD cuts, Tutorials, Brushes etc.

I will re-post it in this post and categorize it giving you credit along with my own contributions. My idea is to obtain a thread full of useful information for someone to be able to access while they are learning Photoshop.

Here is the library so far (I will continually add to it)

    General Tips
    Spoiler

    Resources - Fonts, Brushes, PSD's
    Spoiler

    Tutorials/How to's

The more people we teach and help to learn Photoshop, the more traffic A&G will get! Lets do this PW!

Hey Fresh Prince, great idea for a thread!

My question is not really PS based, but tech based.

I'm branching out into the laptop world (my PC crashes PS), and I was thinking of dabbling in PS. I was told I would want an I-7 processor, but some people also say an I-5. I figured this is the best place to ask about what is adequate to do the job? Just to tinker, etc.

I'm using an I7 processor on my laptop. Photoshop CS6 works pretty well, except for large documents and 3D functionality, but it's only because I'm stuck with 1.60GHz and 4GB ram. Get something really powerful, at least 3.5GHz and 8-16GB ram.

I can't imagine either of them having any trouble running photoshop.. like stefan said, large projects maybe, but honestly, I think even an i5 is way more than you would need.

Here is a list of your top 5 Intel processors from worst to best, up until about 2 months ago I was rocking a Intel Pentium with only 2gb's of Ram and it ran perfectly... Now I have a Core i5 with 6gb of ram and I have honestly not noticed a difference. It loads a bit faster, but either of them runs flawlessly.

    Intel Pentium
    Intel Core
    Intel Core 2
    Intel Core i3
    Intel Core i5
    Intel Core i7

People probably just telling you to go i7 because it is the newest one.

Edit: a little more research for you.

Here is the system requirements for the NEWEST version of PS... CS6

    Photoshop CS6 / Tech specs

    System requirements
    Windows

    Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor
Microsoft® Windows® XP* with Service Pack 3 or Windows 7 with Service Pack 1
    1GB of RAM
1GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash storage devices)
1024x768 display (1280x800 recommended) with 16-bit color and 256MB (512MB recommended) of VRAM
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
    DVD-ROM drive
This software will not operate without activation. Broadband Internet connection and registration are required for software activation, validation of subscriptions, and access to online services.† Phone activation is not available.
so if you go back to my list of processors, we have to go back 4 more generations to find the Pentium 4:

    Pentium 4
    Pentium 4 Extreme Edition
    Pentium M
    Intel Pentium Dual-Core
    Intel Pentium
    Intel Core
    Intel Core 2
    Intel Core i3
    Intel Core i5
    Intel Core i7

So like I said, you would be fine with either, lol.

Throwing a site in here that I've never really seen mentioned much around forums and such, but is a great resource for images for sports (not wrestling unfortunately) and celebs (at premieres and events). Zimbio. Quality images as well.

I don't use PSD Dreams often because they steal most of their renders from other websites. Unfortunately most wrestling PSD sites have closed down in the past few years. The one I use now has a strict registration policy (because PSD Dreams shitheads kept on stealing their renders).

For pictures from TV shows I use http://black-celebration.net/caps/index.php (GREAT website, always updated.)

And for general stock I use http://www.sxc.hu/

    Hi!

I need help flashing together some images for KJ. Normally it's easy, however I want to flash a .PNG with his current banner.

    More specifically:

Help? Anyone know how to do this and can teach me how?

What PS version are you on?

I'm using CS6, but pretty sure you can do this in CS5...maybe CS4 too.

Save the .gif and open it in PS.

    Open the TIMELINE panel:

    Spoiler

Create a new layer from the LAYERS panel. Then also create/duplicate a frame from the TIMELINE panel.

    Spoiler

Open .png, and place it into the new layer. Then align it vertically to the bottom (or center) and horizontally to the center. You will notice that it is this layer that is now visible in the animation frames.

    Spoiler

Then you can change the order and interval of the frames.
Finally go to File > Save for Web and you're finished!

(I forgot to turn of the visibility of the new png layer on the first and second frames. Do that or it'll be visible on each frame.

If you're wondering what that panel is on the top left of my workspace, it's GuideGuide, a plug-in that is INVALUABLE for accurately making guide lines. It's free, and it'll change the way you use PS.

I use CS5, and I did this, but when I saved it, the PNG part of the flashed image showed up all pixelated around the edges. Did that happen for you?

(awesome tutorial though, man! Definitely coming here for more help in the future)

This thread's been extremely helpful in the last few weeks.

The ability to make transparent backgrounds, flash banners, even get fonts and brushes, it was all alien to me. I literally only knew how to insert PSD and pictures onto a blank, or colored canvas and go from there.

    Much appreciated.
