DirecTV may be dropping several Viacom channels at midnight tonight -- including Spike TV, the home of TNA Impact Wrestling -- due to a contract dispute. The other channels threatened to be dropped are Nickelodeon, MTV, VH1, BET, CMT, TV Land and Comedy Central.
"Our negotiations have reached an impasse," Viacom stated in a blog post yesterday.

DirecTV alleges that Viacom is demanding a fee increase of over 30%, and stated that they "just can't afford the extreme increases they are asking for."

"That's an extra billion dollars for the exact channels you already receive," said DirecTV CEO Mike White in a video on a site that they created about the issue. "We think that's unreasonable."

Viacom argues that they are the most-watched network operator on DirecTV and attract about 20% of all DirecTV's viewing, while only garnering 5% of their programming spend. Viacom stated on a blog post that they are asking "for an increase of a couple of pennies per day per subscriber," which they note is "far less than DirecTV pays other programmers with fewer viewers than Viacom."

TNA is urging fans to contact DirecTV to stop them from dropping Spike and the other Viacom channels. The company is also having their stars push hard on Twitter for fans to call DirecTV at (800) 531-5000. Hulk Hogan, Jeff Hardy, Kurt Angle, Velvet Sky and Abyss are amongst the TNA stars sending out messages asking fans to act

I am so glad I don't have sattelite tv. Say what you want about the cable companies, but my cable channels keep growing and sattelite channels keep dropping like flies. First AMC, then all of these channels...... what's going to be next? There obviously will be more on the chopping block in the future.

DirecTV goes through this every once in a while. I don't have G4 anymore. I didn't have fox for I think two days not too long ago, maybe six month ago. And Now this. Usually they work it out and it never lasts too long.

Yah i have been through this with Dish Network and DirecTV probably 4-5 times over the past 4 year...the have always struck a deal at the last moment...those channels they are threatening to drop are pobably some of the highest rated cabel channels and I fully expect things to be fine

What gets me is that they apparently have been showing the "these channels will be dropped" on the Nick channels all day and parents are having to deal with kids being very upset that their shows wont be on tomorrow.

Both sides are pointing fingers. Viacom says its amounts to pennies and there would be no changes in the bill, DirectTV says a billion dollars. Viacom says DirectTV refuses to show the programming as of midnight, DirectTV is saying no Viacom is cutting the signal.

But after seeing how many channels are under this and WHAT channels....I have a feeling they will reach a last minute deal. The main channel it will affect for me atm is Spike. My daughter isn't too thrilled about the Nick channels as she watches Teen Nick alot.

I'm gonna be pissed if Viacom and DirecTV dont settle this...we havd the same thing with the Fox Channels right after UFC jumped to them too...they got it worked out I'm sure this will be worked out as well.

I just jumped from cable to directtv because my cable bill was going up....again. Seriously with internet and cable the cost was $250 and about to go to $290. My satellite and internet is under $100 a month for the first year, then be right at $100 after that.

I have a feeling they will work it out, but its still rather lame. Here I can get MLB Extra Innings for a week for free.....yet they are threatening to take away channels I should get without any issues.

I post numerous message on facebook to Directv and Viacom giving my take, and I even e-mail Viacom. While it takes two to tango butmostly its Viacom fault since they want to raise our bill up, and which they shouldn't. I am not going to pay more on my bill if that is the case and I told Directv not to cave in for it.

This whole network/provider can't work things out is really getting old...

I only really watch Spike for TNA and auction hunters now. But really would hate to lose Comedy Central and to a lesser extent TV Land. They need to come to some agreement that doesn't involve a bill increase which I know it will.

241 Spike: Viacom, the owner of this channel, forced DIRECTV to spend it despite our many request to keep it on. We're working to bring it back as soon as possible without an unfair increase in your bill. They better get this wrapped up by Thursday.

I will be contacting them tomorrow and I will point blank ask DirectTv if this means my contract with them is null and void because they can't deliver on several channels my family watches (almost every channel my 16 yo watches is affected). I switched from cable as I said due to the costs but this is dumb. What is more annoying is that it seems at least once a year this happens. I know Dish and AMC are in the middle of this crap but thats ONE channel, not a decent chunk of the programming. Viacom is giving itself a very black eye over this.

You can try to see if your contract with them can be null and void but I do not think they granted. You can leave them of course but you very likely going to end up paying a fee(not sure how much the fee now.), and I am guessing the contract is one, or two years? If you just sign with them not to long ago then I don't think they'll can null and void your contract without paying the fee, if its like close to one year maybe even though I even doubt that too. But you always ask doesn't hurt to try.

I dont think it voids the contract because in th contracts I beleive there is wording saying that programming is subject to change...and if they are blaminhg it on Viacom (whose fault I also beleive it is) the they will say they have no choice...let us know how it works for ya though because I would liek a lower price...I'm mad about Spike, Comedy Central

Before last night, I didn't realize just how many stations they owned.

You can try to see if your contract with them can be null and void but I do not think they granted. You can leave them of course but you very likely going to end up paying a fee(not sure how much the fee now.), and I am guessing the contract is one, or two years? Bleh. I got the line of "we are back in negotiations to return these channels to your DirectTv service" and got a $10 credit towards ppv fees. Oh well, worth the free phone call to a degree.

Guess I'll be hanging out here tomorrow night finding out what happens on Impact. However I did tell them I am NOT the only person that I know of who is NOT happy about this, that my family is very disappointed and that I have several friends who feel the same way I do.

They did say I can cancel my service if I like given I'm still within my first 30 days of service with no cancellation fee. So I guess those of us with DirectTv are like airplanes circling the aiport.....stuck in a holding pattern. Figures given I wanted to REALLY see Impact tonight to see how it was after the ppv Sunday night

We had a similar issue this side of the pond a couple of years ago with Sky and Virgin Media having a big fallout which lead to Virgin having to drop Sky channels for a while.

All got sorted out in the end though, so I imagine this will be the same. At the end of the day it's in both their best interests to work together.

That sucks for those with Direct TV. I may not like dealing with Comcast Cable from time to time but I've never had a situation like this. From what I read about this and the AMC deal with Dish is that Viacom and whoever owns AMC both want the service providers to carry ALL of the channels that they own and not just the popular ones. Viacom owns BET Networks, BET, Addictinggames, CMT, Comedy Central, Gametrailers, LOGO, MTV, MTV 2, mtvU, Tr3s, NEOPETS, Nickelodeon, NOGGIN, Nick At Nite, Parents Consent, Scratch, Shockwave, Spike, TeenNick, TV Land, VH1 and VH1 Classic. Most people probably don't want the vast majority of those network (if they've even heard of them). If it weren't for things like sports and wrestling I would have probably cancelled my cable and just subscribed to netflix a long time ago. I know a good number of people who do that now.

i read this over at facebook that Viacom is now taking away online programming from everyone. Less than 12 hours after disconnecting DIRECTV’s television viewers, Viacom is at it again by blocking all Americans who want to see their shows on the Internet.

I read that on our local news too. They have blocked viewing full length episodes of shows like Spongebob and such for even guests, apparently they are going to make people pay for using their website.

Reports are filtering from my friends locally that use Hulu and such that some of recent episodes of Viacom programs are being blocked on there too. However reports are that the best channel with the highest viewership that Viacom has.....is Spike. Go figure

At first it sounded more like it was Directv more at fought but now it sounding more like Viacom. Viacom could have got support from viewers if they didn't block their programing on websites while this issue is going on.

It cost me about 123 a month for the net, cable and phone combined.
