Been playing San An again lately on PS2, still a cool game. Vice City is still probably my favourite though.

Well the original overhead ones on the PSX were total boring shite to me, i could never get into them. Then 3 came along and was something i or my friends had never experienced. Such a leap forward in the series, it was staggering. The missions and the storylines in the game were just amazing and it really dragged you in.
Then Vice City came along and was a major disapointment. The coolness wasnt there as much for me and the missions started to go downhill. It was still fairly decent though.
San Andreas. Wow. I am not kidding here, this is one of the worst games ever made. Just every level of bad. Totally horrific missions (driving school? flying school?), driving through endless boring countryside with nothing to do but wish you could just get to the mission already, dire characters, heck even the graphics werent a decent step forward from what i remember. It was a chore to play, its one of the only games i have ever bought and truly wished i had kept my money. I ended up giving it away.
Liberty City Stories was cool, it was 3 but just not quite as good.
GTA4 was a step back in the right direction. They got rid of the shit driving around about 50 million miles to get somewhere, made the environments interesting to drive through again and gave us decent plot points and characters. They also stayed away from the shit flying school and toy helicopter missions and the crap like that.
In summary, its a toss up between 3 and 4 but i go with 3 because it just totally blew me away.

GTA III gets the nod from me for being the last original game in the series. It was an instant classic. One of the most influential titles ever. It spawned dozens of clones, some of which even came from Rockstar themselves. Every single subsequent console release of GTA has been the exact same game except in a different city.

I want Rockstar to really make GTA: Harbour City next. I know it was an April Fools joke, but I think this game could work out. The only thing I'd change is the decade. Make it in the 80s. That way, I can get both Men At Work, and Icehouse in the soundtrack.

San Andreas was the pinnacle of the series for me. There was just so much shit to do and a lot of variety in the setting. I’d love to revisit that city with GTA4’s engine.
Vice City was great as well for its time, but it really doesn’t hold up as well as San Andreas.
GTA4 was a step back from SA.
GTA3 has no replay value to me at all now. Only can go into a few buildings, character doesn’t even talk.

Vice City, because it's the first one I played and the one I've spent the most time on, but San Andreas comes in a very close second. I'm playing it right now to pass it, since I never got passed the Mad Dogg in Las Venturas mission (we had a glitch in our game that messed us up big time).

On a home system: Vice City (PS2)
On portable: China Town Wars (DS)
I would said that the "Grand Theft Auto Series" as a whole has taken a few steps back from the greatness of what it once was.
It doesn't really do it for me LIKE IT USE TO  So you could imagen my delight to find out China Town Wars was decent for a portable though.

Vice city was my favourite mainly because of the 80's setting and the awesome music, not to mention the game was so much fun to play. Also it had Kent Paul (best GTA character ever)
San Andreas, for me, was a pile of shite. I hate the whole gangster/rap thing, I hated driving for ages to get to a mission, I hated driving for ages to get to that mission only for me to get a message saying there was a gang fight and I had to get back to protect my hood (FUCK THAT), I hated how I had to use the analogue stick to control, I hated the music. I think the only thing I liked about San Andreas was that O.G Loc character as he was funny

Chinatown Wars, just for it going back to it roots and being fucking amazing on top of it, although being stuck with the dull and lacklustre GTA IV for a year probably helped with the overwhelming sense of joy at GTA CW.
Vice City and GTA 1 just behind.

GTA3 for me. They still never improved enough as the series went on to really ever top 3. It had the best story by far and I loved how your character never spoke. Even at the end when you beat the game and you think he's finally gonna speak when the girl he saved is nagging the shit out of him all you hear is one last gunshot followed by the credits. It wasn't some Scarface knockoff and it didn't have you doing ridiculously endless boring tasks. Theres been to much side bullshit in all the sequals to 3.
Plus a big thing for me was the map. Bigger was never better in the GTA games imo. I can't stand when it takes 30 minutes to drive from one end of the map to the other. Everything was packed in nicely in the GTA3 world. There wasn't just endless amounts of empty space like San Andreas.

1. GTA IV... Basically everything youd want for a GTA game on a next generation console. Rockstar delivered.
2. Vice City... Lead character was awesome, story was brilliant and the music was superb.
2. GTA III... A great start to a new format in the GTA series
3. GTA SA... Unless your a kid, doing shit like playing basketball, changing your clothes, going gym and other numerous boring shit is not what you want to do in a game. Thank god they omitted alot of that crap out for GTA IV.
GTA III was and still is my favorite GTA of them all.
As for the handheld GTAs, I liked Liberty City Stories a lot and felt that Vice City Stories was good, but not as good.
I haven't tried Chinatown Wars yet. I would like to at some point.

The touch controls work just fine its just that the game itself is abysmal. Think escaping the cops is easy in GTA4? It has nothing on Chinatown Wars which has possibly the stupidest AI in any game that I've played in ages. The AI is beyond mental retardation and is borderline in a vegetative state. But hey the touch screen controls do work so yippee!!!

Vice City was my favorite. It was a great surprise for me and I loved every minute of it, plus taking control of the entire town really has a great appeal.
San Andreas comes in second, because the variety of the tasks that were at hand, and the different environement that were available, that you felt like you're playing a new game every few weeks. I put nothing short of 70 hrs in the game, and I enjoyed each one of them.
IV was the biggest failure to me of all GTAs. Not because there wasn't much to do like in SA, I actually was amazed at the level of depth in the city and how real it felt, and the phone was a good add. However, the repetitive style in the missions is what killed the game for me.
For 90% of the game, all you do is this:
- Drive to take your new mission
- Steal a car, and drive to your destination
- Get out of car, fire at a lot of enemies
- make your way through all the enemies, floor by floor, until you reach the rooftop
- Finally kill the big boss and leave.
This is what 90% of the game was.
What happened to originality in gaming? In San Andreas, you'd go from running away from the police on your bike, to high jacking a moving truck, to using a bike to follow a plane that is taking off, to a stealth mission where you have to steal a record, to trying to escape your death from a rioting city, to meeting your gf and robbing a bank... I mean, I can't think of a single mission type in San Andreas that was repeated twice.
Gta IV was focused too much on the city itself and they forgot to work on the missions. Nothing about it was fun after the first 10 hours.
San Andreas would keep coming up with new missions even after the 40th hour...

:meh: Codes don't make the game more enjoyable for me. I talk a lot of shit about Nintendo because theres a lot of shit to talk about. Clearly though if I have such strong opinions on Nintendos products its probably because I've played these products and hence own Nintendos systems. I payed for the systems and I payed for the games and if feel like a game is total garbage I'm going to voice that opinion. This was a 3rd party game and in my opinion it fucking sucked. My post had nothing to do with system bashing because if it was the same game on the PSP I would have made the same complaints.

Both have great stories, great characters, and fun missions(except for flying school on San Andreas).

Game could of been a lot of fun if I did not have to switch between shit touch controls and real controls every minute.
And if you think tapping on a screen to break a window or turning a screwdriver in the ignition of a car on the touch screen is good well then you must love the Wii as it is filled with such garbage gimmicks in almost every game.
And throwing grenades.... oh man what a piece of shit game. I'm happy it did so terrible on the DS maybe next time they'll rethink throwing in gimmicky touch controls and ruining a potential good game.
It's as if Nintendo forces companies to add in garbage touch controls or motion controls to develop on their system. Wouldn't surprise me. Or maybe they think people actually like garbage like this.
:nono: Come on now your freakin' trippin' it got very great reviews and I can almost gurantee your in the minority with that stupid opinion.

You're missing the point. The touch controls suck in CW. And there are plenty of games mostly the superior games on the DS that do not use touch screen or rather make the touch screen an option to use instead of forcing players to use their shitty touch screen.
Sorry for the angry responses. I'm just in a really bitchy mood.

I never said I was a fan of the touch controls but they work and casual/kid gamers love it. My son loves it he loves the touch screen. Sadly like 95% of Wii games the touch controls just feel like unnessary tacked on controls that add nothing to the game.

Vice City, the weapons was the best in any GTA/GTA style game I have ever played in my life. The storyline was pretty interesting for the GTA series game which is famous for there free roaming, and the main character has a very smooth personally until you make him made then shit hits the fan. The Miami like setting was nice just got boring at times, nice cars, the women, buying company's and having a mansion with a helicopter on the roof is ill.

I enjoyed using the weapons code in GTA 3,Walking up the hospital ramp, and rocket launching on to every cop I could find.
I enjoyed the music the most when it came to the series.Lazlo is god!

IV definitely.

GTA IV by far. What an incredible masterpiece. Niko is hands down my favorite character because of his wit and you can really feel the emotion coming from him. He's been through messed up stuff but keeps grinding trying to survive.
I loved the fact in IV you weren't really trying to "take over the city" but just trying to survive. The games graphics are phenomenal and game play felt so real. I love just exploring liberty city with people online and having a blast.
I've gone back and played old GTA's since the release of IV...they're great but IV is just amazing.

Vice City by like a billion miles.
Best story, funniest characters, best missions, best setting, best atmosphere, best music, best everything.
IV was okay. Fun at first, but then it just got shit. I don't care how big you make a city and all that, but if you're going to do that and allow your character to enter buildings, don't make 99% of them have the same interior. With IV there was no real point to walking around and exploring buildings because inside each one was the same wallpaper and design, which was just a flight of stairs which went up like 200 levels to get you to the roof.
Then they had to go and make it really realistic by having the friend who nobody likes constantly calling and sending you text messages trying to organise stuff.
UGH.
Lazlo is god!
Agreed.
He is part of what made Chatterbox so funny to listen to.

GTA:VC was my favorite GTA by a large margin. In my opinion, it was the last of the GTA games that went for the "cartoony, over the top" feel that gave the series so much of its appeal to me. San Andreas was still comical in the graphical appearance, but the RPG elements of it really turned me off, and GTA4 was the opposite, with the grit/realism level turned way too high, but with the entertaining gameplay. If they could tone down the realism a bit in the next installment, I think I'd have a new favorite.
Oh and I hated the music from GTA4. The best part about VC was that you could sing along to the songs on the radio. They took hits from the 80s that everyone recognized, or at least knew a bit of. Who didn't start singing along to Africa the first time it came on? The funny radio stations were fine, I enjoyed the court show alot. Lots of funny stuff from that channel.

1. San Andreas. It was perfect. It had everything, and more. I can't complain about anything in the game....nothing.
2. GTA III. It was a great game. It was at the time something unreal. I loved it and played it for ages.
3. Vice City : It was a great game. I played it fully, but it just lacked something...
4. GTA IV. The worst GTA since 3 in my opinion. It lacked everything that San Andreas had. The game felt more of a shooting game. The storyline was awesome, but it just lacked, probably since it had follow San Andreas, but I think the creaters leftstuff out, so they implement it in the next game.
People calling GTA 4 the best are just being stupid, or have not played the game and have based it on the reviews. Its no where near as good as the other three. No where near.
