Just an idea I came up with a couple days ago. The concept is stupidly simple. Basically, you just post and list a game/games that you think other posters may want to try out*. There's no limitation on what you recommend. It can be for any sytem, from any genre, from any year, etc. All I ask is that the people who recommend a game either give a review or list the pros and cons of the game (if you don't think you can write up a good review). Now that the rules are out of the way, I'll get us started.

Chrono Trigger (DS version)

Year of release: 2008

Genre: Role-Playing Game.

Pros:

*Unique and brilliant storyline revolving around a boy (Chrono) and his friends travelling through time to prevent the time travelling beast Lavos from ever getting a chance to destroy the earth.

*The battle system is cool. Essentially, it's what I call a turn based, yet time sensitive battle system. Everybody takes turns, but if you take too long, the enemy will end up striking you. It's something plenty of turn based RPG fans can support well enough and it encourages you to think on your feet.

*It's a very pretty looking 2D game. While I've never played Chrono Trigger on the SNES, I'd imagine it looks nearly the same as it does on the DS

*The bosses are not cake walks. You can't just cast a bunch of spells randomly or decide on what part of boss to target by playing eenie-meeny-miney-mo or you'll get steamrolled over. There's definitely some strategizing involved and when your strategy pays off and the big baddy dies, there's a sense of satisfaction.

*The regular enemies prove to be a good challenge for your party, though I've not run across any baddies that are so hard, they make you rip your hair out, which is good.

*You can actually fight Lavos once you reach "The End of Time" and subsequently travel to 1999 A.D. I lasted quite a while against him and it was quite an awesome battle, even if he did end up beating me.

*The cutscenes are very well done.

*The music and sound in general is good. Nothing outstanding, IMO, but it fits in with the game

*The characters are all ones you can root for/against, which is important.

*The settings are all beautiful and unique. You can tell a real effort was made in making each area different and special in it's own way.

Cons:

*The battle system may not be everybody's cup of tea. Some people may prefer a more PURELY turn based game that allows you all the time in the world. That being said, I prefer it the way it is now.

*Some boss battles can tend to be pretty long. While it's not an issue for me and in fact, I welcome a long boss battle involving a ton of strategizing, I realize it may be for some, so I'm listing it here.

Next up is.....

Dead Space (Xbox 360 and PS3)

Year of release: 2008

Genre: Third person Survival Horror and Shooter game

Pros:

*Good storyline revolving around our hero Isaac dropping by the planet mining ship Ishimura to check on things after the Ishimura fails to respond to radio transmissions sent to it. It is later revealed that (click the tag to read the rest at your own risk) a very wide-spread and influential religious group believes that an "alien" relic called the marker (which was thought earlier on the game to be stored on the Ishimura, which is why it was thought the aliens invaded it....because humans got into their shit) is proof which justifies their beliefs in other lifeforms when in fact, the aliens and the marker were synthetic and created so that those who developed both could benefit off of the religious group paying them off. Or at least, that's what I got from the storyline (it does kind of get confusing :$)

*It feels longer than it is. Like even though you'll only invest 20 or so hours into it, once those 20 hours or so are up, you'll be very satisfied that you squeezed that much action out of it.

*At the very least, it's unsettling throughout a lot of the game. At times, it can be downright fucking scary and tense. It provides a real sense of tension and urgency, which is KEY in a survival horror game.

*There is a great array of weaponry, from the flamethrower to the pulse rifle to the line gun to the force gun, etc.

*It's fun as hell to shoot an enemies limbs off and watch the blood SPILL.

*The graphics were awesome.

*The stasis and telekinetic abilities provided to Isaac are awesome and you get to use them in inventive ways throughout the game.

*The boss battles are neither too hard nor too easy. There's a good balance that was achieved.

Cons:

This is no pussy game. Sometimes I was reluctant to grab the controller and keep playing and had to stop playing for a while because of being scared of what was to come. Personally, I don't think of it as a con for me (sure, it may seem that way when you go do something else because you feel as if you're about to drop a log in your pants, but for me, it makes me appreciate how great the game is), but this is definitely going to be one for some people, so I'm listing this here as a precaution.

*The storyline can get confusing, so pay close attention.

*It's easy to use up supplies and credits. I've encountered many a time when I wanted so bad to get new armor or a toy, but I had to instead buy ammo and med packs to ensure I even survived

*Could be a couple hours longer, but that's less of a con and more of me being selfish.

Next

Fallout 3 (PS3, 360)
-------------------

Genre: First/3rd person RPG/Shooter

Year of release: 2008

Pros:

*Very long game with a ton of sidequests and plenty of places to explore etc. Prepare to lose any social life you had once you pop it in.

*Awesome graphics.

*The main storyline is well done and engaging

*The sidequests don't feel like worthless filler (*CoughMassEffectCough*)

*Although it's far from unique, I like the concept of letting players choose whether they want to be an evil asshole, a hero to the distressed citizens of the Capital Wasteland or somewhere in between (I'm the former :).)

*You have the freedom to go anywhere you want, basically. Like Oblivion, it's a very non-linear game.

*The "perks" are actually worth a damn and can really help you out, while others are just plain fun (I love the "explorer" perk)

*The V.A.T.S system is very innovative and is essential throughout the game.

*Epic array of weaponry on display here. You got your assault rifles, laser pistols, laser rifles, magnums, hunting rifles, switchblades, lead pipes, police batons, the ripper (you'll like it, trust me.), etc.

*Same thing for the armor to a lesser extent.

*The environment is well done. It actually looks like the aftermath of a nuclear fallout

Cons:

*It's kind of a slow game during the first couple hours and when you start nearing the end of the game.

*Some enemies are flat out fucking ANNOYING and seem to exist just to piss you off (Hi, Deathclaw! Believe me, you'll grow to hate those sons of bitches.)

*Some locations are not easy to reach at all. You may find it easier just to take a different route to reach the place you wanna get.

*The sheer scope of the game may overwhelm you at first. It did for me, but I ended up coping well.

*Sometimes it's very hard to nail the part of an enemy you want to with V.A.T.S. Personally, I'd recommend that if you want to cripple somebody's leg you just zoom in on it.

May write up a few more run-downs of some games, but definitely not doing any more for now, as those took a while to write up. Alright guys, get to recommending.

Edit: Alternatively and I'll admit that I just thought of this new rule, you can ask for recommendations from other posters. The rules of recommending games apply. The person recommending the game should give reasons and I don't mean "OMG, best game evah~! LOLOLOLOLOL.". Afterall, these people may end up paying money for the games you recommend and I'm a firm believer in people getting bang for their bucks.

I made made one of these threads over a year ago, it got a lot of posts at first but then it died quick after that. hopefully this one lasts longer, a thread like this could be useful.
:)

Hmm..let's see, has anyone here besides me played Fatal Frame 2?

It's awesome horror game, in my top 5 of all of them.

Fatal Frame 2
Pros:
Good graphics
Scary as fuck
Fun
Unique

Cons:
Not your typical game, you don't shoot anybody, you take photos. That may put off some

Beyond Good & Evil
Pros:
Good Presentation
Beautiful artistic style
Good voice acting
Creative

Cons:
Short
Animations are sometimes subpar

If you guys are yet to play either of these, I suggest you go give them a look ASAP.

PS3 users-

Valkyria Chronicles: The most underrated game released last year and also one of the best JRPG’s released in a very long time. The gameplay is an innovative take on RTS with it being played out in 3rd person and having a lot of JRPG elements mixed in with it. The story was amazing as well. The characters are well thought out and they each have their own distinct personalities.

LBP: A truly revolutionary game. The videogame equivalent of youtube; there’s nothing else like it out right now. Creative levels, fun co-op play, and it never ends. Go get it.

MGS4: Warning! If you hate cutscenes, don’t pick this one up! But, if you do, you’re really in for a treat. This game takes presentation and animation to another level. The plot is well written and the cast of characters are some of the best I’ve ever seen. Also, the gameplay’s refined from previous MGS’s and much more enjoyable. What I like is the diversity in how you approach playing it. You can be a cool stealthy secret agent Snake, or you could go commando on everybody. It’s really up to you.

Resistance 2: Fun single player, addicting multiplayer.

Ima do some of these :D.......Probably do both good and bad reviews.

Game: Persona 4:
Year of Release: December of 2008
System: PS2
Type Of Game: JRPG/Role Playing Game

Pros:
- Ability to fuse personas, almost Monster Ranchers-Pokemon esque by that you can only have a certain amount with you at a time and some have weaknesses while others are stronger towards a spell. Its Monster Rancher like because of the fusions that can make your monster/spirit stronger

- Social Link: Its Thousand Arms like by that you befriend people and it takes 10 meetings with the person to max out the link. This is important because this helps level up your persona/monster and if you get a maxed out link, you then can get the ultimate form of the link.

- Solid battle system: It really is a good battle system and it IMPROVED on the Persona 3 battle system. Some of the things that it improved upon is now you control ALL of your party members which was a major gripe for me in Persona 3 since often the AI of your teammates is annoying as they just waste their magic on often meaningless magic while your stuck by yourself trying to do the work. New features also pop up when you increase your social link with party members like they can take a devastating blow that would finish you off or they can do a move to stun an enemy.

- Solid characters: Each character has a dark past in them and you have to face the dark side in a boss battle every time. Varies all over the place as far as this goes but it gives detail to each character which wasnt so much the case in Persona 3. P3 had good characters dont get me wrong, just theres more personality and all with these ones in P4

- Unique boss battles: Dont want to spoil away too much here but the boss battles like in 3 are fun and are creative.

- Up to 80-90 hours of gameplay. Same with P3, great gameplay all around. Decent replayability as there are a 2-3 big things you can do if you were to replay the game again like 2 special boss battles and new personas/monsters.

- Good graphics for a PS2 game, colorful and wacky. Same character designs in 3 pretty much and similar graphics to that just a bit lighter

- I actually liked the English acting of this game for the most part, although some dont care for it and prefer the Japanese version of games. Felt every character for the most part had the right voice actor acting for them.

Cons
- If the main character dies, its a game over. HATE, HATE, HATE this. Whats to stop the other members from fighting on? Cmon. I know your the leader, but if I was one of those members I'd still fight on.............

- The beginning is very tedious and you dont get into a true fight until 2-3 hours into the game. Its not Kingdom Hearts 2 bad but it can still be tough for newcomers of the series. After this, its easy sailing and you will get some battles going.

- Story can get a bit confusing at first and all but you get eased into it with enough playing. Throwing people in a TV and them being killed can confuse anyone at first.

- I played this on expert mode and beat this so maybe its just due to the difficulty but unlike in 3, theres no save points before a sub boss which you will fight quite a bit of. So getting Goho-M's(They allow you to escape dungeons and start from the floor you were on) are a NECESSITY in this game because you can get killed off easily in the game if not high enough level or prepared well. This is probably just a hard more thing though.....

If there is stuff I would include that is in the middle itd be this

- Music. The boss battle music outside of 1 are friggin sweet but the Jpop music can be a kind of turn off for some people. P4 has some sick music and some bad music. Its all opinion and taste though

- Its a dungeon exploring game so its a matter of opinion as far as if you like these kind of games.

Overall: Id give this game a 9/10 as 10 would be PERFECT and P4 isnt perfect but is a hell of a game. I'd recommend this game for any RPG player and for the non RPG players I dont think you'd enjoy this game but I still say you should give it a shot and let the game go on past the beginning/slow 2-3 hrs when you get to fight some bosses and explore. Great experience for me and was into the game and beat it around New Year's.............Beat it completely outside of the stuff on the 2nd gameplay.

Onimusha 2
System: Playstation 2

Think Devil May Cry, except Japanese. This is a great action slasher game. You control Jubei Yagyu and a few other side characters in his quest to rid Japan of a Genma (demon) army.

The gameplay is much like Devil May Cry, press buttons to slash with your sword and perform a variety of combos. However button mashing is not the key, if you time your attack correctly you can score a critical hit, instantly killing normal monsters. Then there are the magic attacks which deal a ton of damage.

Another great gameplay feature is the ability to absorb souls, which can help boost the level of your weapons or armour, or replenish your health and magic. There are also the rare purple souls which, when you collect 5 of them, makes you become temporarily invincible and very powerful.

There are many different weapons available for Jubei, as well as several points in the game where you play as one of the four side characters. You won't play as all of them during one playthrough, there are many paths through the main storyline which are unlocked by the way in which you interact with side characters. This gives the game a nice sense of longevity.

In addition to that, there are quite a few puzzles in the game, the main source of puzzles are special treasure chests which you must open. The difficulty of said puzzles rapidly increases as you progress through the game. Finally the boss battles are just amazing. Most of them are a really enjoyable challenge. I've reset my playstation after winning a boss battle just so I could do it again and again.

This is one of my favourite games of all time, and even though it is very similar to its more famous counterpart, Devil May Cry, I enjoy the Onimusha games much more.

The first Onimusha is similar but not as long, and the series starts to go downhill IMO for Onimusha 3 and 4. Onimusha 3 is more of the same except you time/place travel between modern day France and Japan in the past between two characters. Onimusha 4 incorporates a lot more RPG elements with levelling up and other features. They are still good games, but Onimusha 2 is far superior to 3 and 4.

Hmmm...I'm gonna try and aim for some obscure recommendations:

Chulip(PS2):

A quirky Japanese game where your objective is simply to kiss people. Of course, kissing people is easier said than done because you must firgure out how and when to kiss each person. The game is admittedly slow paced and its a really brain teaser...you may end up really confused as to where to go, what to do, and how to achieve your goals. The game has a real great sense of humor and is suited to those interested in puzzle/stagety/adventure games.

Red Dead Revolver(PS2):

A Western game originally developed by Capcom but released in the US by Rockstar. This game is slightly better than Activisions Western offering "Gun"...Although, the game has a more linear structure as opposed to Gun's large open world gameplay. Obviously, this game is more suited to those who are into run and gun games with subtle stealth elements. A fair warning though, this game does get especially hard as you progress through it. The game also sports some fairly nice visuals and you also get to play as multiple characters in the story mode.

Mr Mosquito(PS2):

A stragety game where you get to play as a Mosquito. Your objective is simply to suck peoples blood out without being noticed and without being squished. This game is suited for those who are obviously into puzzle/stragety games.

Robot Alchemic Drive or R.A.D.(PS2):

In this game, you control a giant robot to fight off giant monsters that attack the city. There is kind of a twist though. The in-game character controls the robot via remote control...Which means you have to position him in a place where you can view the robot while avoiding getting yourself killed so you can give the robot commands. You'll have to reposition yourself every now and then for various reasons...so that means you'll be switching from controlling the main character and the robot every now and then. It should be noted that while controlling your main guy is relatively simple...The controls for the robot can take a bit of time to get use to. A fair warning though, the voice acting in this game is brutal. I'd recommended this game to anyone interested in a new type of gameplay experience.

Disaster Report or Raw Danger(PS2):

Both of these games are survival games that involve surviving through natural disasters that hit a city built on a man made island. Both games are pretty much stragety games with alot of trial and error gameplay. There is also a relationship building aspect in these games...and both games have multiple paths and events that alter the story...so there is a bit of replay value for each game. The downside to both games is that they were made with an extremely limited budget...so the graphics, controls, and voice acting are of very bad quality.

Incredible Crisis(PS1):

A quirky Japanese mini-game collection game. This game is especially humorous and very entertaining. The mini-games are all great and the story is funny. The game has you play as a Japanese business man(and his family...I think) that endures a series of unfortunate events. I would only suggest getting this game if you can find it at a dirt cheap price.

Mr Domino(PS1):

A puzzle game where you must knock down a whole set of Dominos stacked throughout an entire level. This game has you on rails so you are only limited to moving left and right. The levels are set up like race tracks and your character goes around them as much as he can with the allotted time that you are given. Once you stack your Dominos the only way to knock them down is by waiting till your next pass around the track and then run into them. The final level is especially hard since you only are only given enough time for one pass through the track.

Heres an overlooked classic that I know some of you must have played:

Okami.

Seriously, if you own a Wii or PS2 and haven't tried this, you owe it to yourself to buy this game. If any game was severly overlooked and deserved far better sales it was this. I preferred this to Zelda TTP.

Fire Pro Wrestling Returns-PS2 november 2007?i think.

This game is the shit,it mostly consists of japanese puro wrestlers, with a good amount of american wrestlers.not only is this a wrestling game,it is also a MMA game, and a Kickboxing game.the edit system allows you to create any wrestler, all the moves are there, all the taunts and mannerisms of your favorite wrestlers.you can also create logo's and design your ring,or if you have a usb cheat device you can download them from the internet.the gameplay is beutiful, and even when your good the computer does not let you have a squash match.some may not like the 2d graphics but the animations are still tight.i give the game 9/10.1 loss point for no story mode.

This is not so much a personal recommendation, but a request for some. I'm a big RPG fan and I'd like some suggestions on some that'd be a good investment. If possible, I'd like something that has a relatively low/moderate price tag (I'm trying to watch what I spend.), that'll last me for quite a while.....at least a few days. Some other details to consider is I kinda want this to be a relatively unknown game (though it doesn't necessarily have to be.), it can't be an import as my PS2 isn't modified to handle those and it should be turn based, as I'm not a fan of real time RPGs. Thanks in advance. Oh and guys, feel free to request as well as recommend like I just did here. Afterall, this thread will get a lot more activity going on if people are allowed to ask and get answers and as fans of video games, the more games recommended, the better.

So PS2 games only?

Well by far the best RPG for PS2 in terms of its length, fun, sidequests, simple but well done story, gorgeous world map and characters would be Dragon Quest VIII. Will give you 50-60 hours or so for the story alone, and another 15 at least if you wanna 100% it.

Disgaea 1 and 2, if your into strategy Rpgs like Final Fantasy Tactics, are both absolute classics for sure. You can get 150+ hours out of both these games. I played Disgaea for 12 hours straight myself, i never put the pad down once.

If your PS2 plays PSX games (mine doesnt :( ) i can come up with a lot more, but i dunno if your just looking for PS2.

Hmmm...Lets see know:

Dragon Quest VIII
Disgaea 1 & 2
Phantom Brave(Its the same as Disgaea)
Mikai Kingdom(Same as Disgaea again)
La Pucelle(Same as Disgea too)
Stella Deus(Its kind of like Disgaea but with better character sprites and minus the over the top special moves)
Shin Megami Nocturne(This one is kinda hard)
Shin Megami Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2
Persona 3 FES & 4(Part of the Shin Megami series so the previous games I mentioned should seem fairly similar in terms of art style and theme)
Okage(You could a used copy for like $7)
Legend of Legaia 2
Alterier Iris 1 & 2(A Hi-res 2D RPG)
Shadow Hearts Covenant
Shadow Hearts From the New World
RPG Maker 2 & 3(If you just feel like making your own turn based RPG)
Soul Nomad and the World Eaters(RTS style RPG)
MS Saga(A SD Gundam based RPG)
Magna Carta
Suikoden 3, 4, & 5

Thats all I can think of...If you wanna know more about each of those games...I recommend you hit up Youtube and find some gameplay vids or just go to Gamefaqs and look for some reviews...or you could just buy some of them blindly on a whim...that could turn out good...or not.

PSX RPGs (i am assuming naming Final Fantasys isnt neccessary)

-Xenogears (awesomeee and soooooo frickin long, i still havnt completed it)
-Wild Arms 1 and 2. Both amazing, then the series sort of went to shit.
-Tales of Destiny, in fact anything in the Tales series.
-Suikoden 1 and 2, though there basically impossible to find i believe, i had to take a less than legal approach.

I'll think of more later and update this post

Read my review on Persona 4, M.V.P.M its 40 bucks but its a good 80-90 hrs long. If you can find Persona 3 FPS its probably 30 bucks and its the same amount of hours. Both have different stories but similar gameplay. You will probably enjoy it most likely.
