IGN: Next Metal Gear Gets Green Light?

UK, December 5, 2008 - A cryptic teaser hinting at the "next Metal Gear" has appeared on the Kojima Productions website, but quite what it means is anyone's guess. The website page shows a mathematical sum, with two alert symbols equalling what looks like a power symbol. Not much to go on you might think, but the symbols are in green and the power symbol bears more than a passing resemblance to the Xbox 360 ring, albeit with a smaller alert symbol at the top. Could it mean Metal Gear Solid 4 is finally coming to Xbox 360? We certainly hope so, but similarly it could also mean something completely different.


We contacted to Konami to get an official comment on what it all means but as yet we have received no reply. We'll keep you updated with any developments but in the meantime let us know what you think the symbols mean in the comments below.

As much as I enjoy Metal Gear, and no matter how many times I found myself drooling during MGS4, I really don't want to see another game. I am sure it will be even more amazing, I'm sure Kojima can do no wrong when it comes to video gaming, but with all the hints on MGS4 being the last one, and with everyone saying that Snake will die in this fourth and FINAL installment, I found myself a bit cheated when it didn't happen. Even in the game itself, they built everything so high, we saw him decaying in front of our eyes, and yet, in the end, BAM, a happy Hollywood ending for you. This was a bit of a set back for me, so now, seeing a new game might be coming to life is not exciting me.

I want to see Kojima put his focus on a new franchise, I want to benefit from his adorable genius head in different types of games, in different stories, different styles... I don't know...

The only thing we can know for sure about the next Metal Gear is that Hideo Kojima won't play an active role in its development, and Solid Snake will also not be in it. Although, I also think that Otacon will be the only MGS alumni that makes an appearence in part 5...Mainly because all the other characters had some sort of closure in part 4. We'll just have to wait and see in the end.

Oh, that reminds me...The teaser seems to imply there will be a Xbox 360 version...Or even possibly that the next one will be a 360 exclusive. It wouldn't really be that surprising considering that the 360 is outselling the PS3...Although, there really hasn't been an MGS game that didn't appear on a Sony system...Hmmm...On second thought, perhaps the universe would explode...maybe even implode.

Imo the next Metal Gear will be on the xbox 360... but really doubt it will be an xbox exclusive.

With the current financial climate it would be stupid for developers to only reach one part of the market when they can reach the majority with no trouble at all.

Rumor has it Metal Gear Solid 4 is soon to grace the Xbox 360 and reward the platform faithful. The rumor itself is nothing new, but the picture above, just unveiled by Konami at this website, has speculators salivating. Since the colors are electric green on black, and since the symbol to the right looks an awful lot like the symbol in the middle of the power button on the face of the 360, it's not hard to see why.

On the other hand, it's actually just the universal power symbol, also known as IEC 5009 (which refers to "power" but alternatively to "standby" or both "power/standby") as well as IEEE 1621, where it refers explicitly to the "power control user interface." It's also on Apple laptops, Windows-based laptops, desktops, various other electronic devices, and if you look at the touch button on your PS3 -- yep, it's there too. That it's green may have some significance...or it may be a red herring. Hard to say.

Some are speculating the lower case 'i' is for iPod, and that the exclamation point has to do with the logo for Metal Gear Acid.

What else do we know? Not much. We know the word "Solid" isn't in the teaser, so that lends credibility to the Metal Gear Acid theory. There's also Metal Gear Online to think about, and possibly Metal Gear Mobile. Perhaps a Metal Gear for the iPhone?

On the other hand, the URL for the teaser (http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/mgst/?ref=kjp_jp) contains the letters 'mgst'. "Metal Gear Solid Tactics" for [insert your theory of choice here] anyone?

The symbol is the standard green power symbol that is on almost everything. It's about as much to do with the 360 as the logo for a USB port.

Lil big world? Do you mean Little Big Planet? If so, thats a Sony made title...it ain't gonna show up on any other system...ever. You're better off hoping that MS decides to make a game similar to LBP. It could happen...you never know.

Why should other people be excluded from talking about a game six months after its release because you don't have money?

I haven't been able to pick it up for myself due to financial and technical issues. I'm really excited to finally get a chance to play it, though. I was going through MGS2 earlier, and it's just as fun as I remember and it took my usual hour to get used to not sucking. :lol: I'm glad that they added the pause feature in MGS4 during the cut scenes though, because I keep missing important stuff when the phone rings.

And you know what? A new Metal Gear without Snake wouldn't necessarily be the worst thing. The whole Raiden thing worked for me in Sons of Liberty. Give us a badass new character but keep Snake as an important part of the story and that will be good enough for me. More prequels or stories in between the current games would be still be awesome, though.

Jesus, I guess I'm one of the only ones who still believes in exclusives. I mean if I want to play Gears of War/Halo/Fable 2, guess what I've got to buy a 360 to play it. Same thing with a PS3, if I want to play LittleBigPlanet,Metal Gear Solid 4 or God of War 3.....I'm going to have to buy a PS3. It's that simple.

Hmmm...But weren't their rumors of Tecmo wanting to put Dead or Alive on the PS3. And with Itagaki gone from Team Ninja and Tecmo...that will more than likely happen...Especially since Ninja Gaiden has already made its way to the PS3. Besides, its not like Tecmo is a MS first or second party dev.

As for Halo, obviously that will never happen. I think MS owns the rights to that one...or Bungie is a second party dev or something...I forget.

Point is...never say never when it comes to third party companies. Remember, the GC did get MGS: Twin Snakes and the original Xbox did get MGS2: Subsistence. Anything can happen.

It probably would...and you'd probably have to actually swap the discs because there is no way they'd be able to fit MSG4 on even a single dual layered DVD-9 disc. That game took up almost 100% of the space on a Bluray disc...and thats alot of space. 8.5 GB vs 50 GB I believe...I'm not too sure though.

I am NOT a MGS fanatic, I only played MGS3 and MGS4, and started with MGS2, but never finished half of it.

Another fact, is that if I had bought the 360, in my country, I can get bootlegged games for around 5$ since it's an HD-DVD, and they would play just as good as the original, whereas I can only buy original Blu Ray discs for the Ps3, each costing 80$.

Another fact, I paid 1600$ for a HD TV Bravia 42', I paid 650$ for an 80gb PS3 all in one month (yes, things are a looot more expensive in my country), and I am telling you that MGS is worth all these stuff I just paid for.

If GTAIV was still exclusive, I would have told you it's not nearly worth it, because the game blows. But MGS4 is not just a video game, and I haven't had a single moment of regret for getting a ps3 since I played that game. It's worth every single penny, and it's THAT good. No, it's BETTER.

I played MGS4...went through it 3 times(only to get the stealth camo)...and I can definitely say...its not worth buying a PS3 over. I'm not saying the game isn't good...its just not "Go out and buy a PS3 solely for this game" good. And to be honest, I think MGS3(went back and actually played through the whole game after dismissing it in the past) was alot better than MGS4. But thats just my opinion.
